ASIAN AMERICAN FILM FESTIVAL |
9500
LIBERTY FREE SHOWING! Asian American Film
Festival:
Jacobs Center (404 Euclid Ave,
San Diego CA 92114) Tues Oct 27. 7pm
Prince William County, Virginia becomes ground zero in America's explosive
battle over immigration policy when elected officials adopt a law
requiring police officers to question anyone they have "probable cause" to
suspect is an undocumented immigrant. 9500 Liberty reveals the
startling vulnerability of a local government, targeted by national
anti-immigration networks using the Internet to frighten and intimidate lawmakers and citizens. Alarmed by a climate of fear and racial
division, residents form a resistance using YouTube videos and virtual
townhalls, setting up a real-life showdown in the seat of county
government. |

PUTTING OURSELVES TOGETHER: AUTHENTICITY, WHOLENESS, AND SELF-LOVE
LGBT Resource Center : Conference Room Wed Oct 28. 5-7pm
There is more about the amazing you than what most people
see! Yet sometimes we don't allow ourselves to be our whole being to be shared
with other people. Often times it is easy to share things like our favorite ice
cream flavor, our college or major, but things that are more personal like our
political views, our passions, cultural beliefs and values, or our partner's
gender are left behind. Whether it's with friends, family, work, or school,
parts of our identities are often left behind. Come share your experiences
about these situations, and learn ways to incorporate that part of you that's
often forgotten. Be your whole, authentic selves without compromising what's
most important -YOU! Light refreshments and snackage will be provided, and come
make a puzzle piece to put on display. If you have any questions, feel free to
send a message to rgalura86@gmail.com. ---

VIOLENCE AND THE INDIVIDUAL Center Hall Room 109 Mon Oct 26, 6pm Please join the University Art Gallery in the first of
three discussions associated with the current exhibition entitled Off the
Beaten Path: Violence, Women and Art that to explore the global
ramifications of gender-based violence." Throughout
the world, women and girls are victims of countless and senseless acts of
violence. The range of gender-based violence is devastating, occurring, quite
literally, from womb to tomb," explains Randy Jayne Rosenberg curator and executive director of Art Works For Change. "The stories that underlie these artworks return us imaginatively to
the event of violation and allow it to affect us."
This program will be in a
roundtable
discussion that examines the range of issues from domestic violence to human
trafficking that affect women globally and what is being done to address these
concerns as well as what action can be taken.
Speakers
include: Taja McKinney-Zisler from CastLA, Kathi Anderson from Survivors of Torture and Katie Feifer from the
Voices and Faces project. --- |
LIVING UNDER THE TREES A PHOTO EXHIBIT OF INDIGENOUS MEXICAN FARMWORKERS IN CALIFORNIA Institutes of the Americas Thurs Oct 29, 6:30-8:30pm
The exhibit is
composed of a series of powerful photographs, new works by award-winning
journalist and documentary photographer David Bacon and moving
narratives that explore the unique challenges facing California's indigenous
Mexican communities. It documents the consequences of economic dislocation from
Mexico and the challenges these dislocated communities face in California.
But the exhibit also celebrates the culture and community spirit that sustains
these migrants who are agents of change, questioning unfair work conditions,
working for better housing and making critical decisions about their community.
