Youth 2 Youth Grant
 
If you're 25 or younger, and have a great idea for a project (or you're already running a program!) to help other young people in your community, why not apply for a Youth 2 Youth grant? Do Something will award grants of $500 and $250 to help run 30 different projects throughout the United States and Canada that are by youth and for youth. Apply here by October 30.

UCLA will be hosting the 20th annual UC-wide Students of Color Conference on November 21-23. It's an amazing opportunity to dialogue and organize with progressive students across the state, and is for both students of color and allies.

MANA Scholarship
 
The MANA de San Diego Scholarship Program was established in 1991 in memory of Sylvia Chavez, a talented and tireless volunteer of MANA de San Diego.Once the applications are received; the applications are reviewed and recipients selected by a talented and dedicated volunteer committee based on academic and non-academic criteria of the applicant including: leadership, community involvement, educational aspirations, career goals, grade point average, special circumstances, and financial need. Call for Papers 
 
The Center for the Study of Race and Ethnicity at the University of California, San Diego and the Journal of the History of Sexuality, invite paper proposals for a conference on the history of the intersection of race and sexuality.  The best papers presented at the conference will be peer-reviewed and edited as a special issue of the Journal of the History of Sexuality.  The conference will be held in San Diego on the UCSD campus on Saturday, January 17, 2009.  All expenses will be covered for conference participants.

GRADUATE DIVERSITY DINNER: RACE, GENDER, SEXUALITY, AND THE 2008 ELECTIONS

All graduate students and faculty are invited to the annual Fall Diversity Dinner and panel presentation. A favorite event of the academic buttonsyear, the Diversity Dinner brings together folks from across campus who are interested in contemporary issues of social justice.  
 
The distinguished speakers at this dinner will address the complex intersections of race, gender, and sexuality in the upcoming November 4th California and presidential elections.  
 
Featured Panelists: Professor Sara Kaplan, UCSD Ethnic Studies Department; Professor Brad Sears, Executive Director, The Williams Institute on Sexual Orientation Law and Public Policy at UCLA; and Professor Pat Washington, UCSD Ethnic Studies Department & San Diego Community Activist.

Dr. Dionne Espinoza was raised in the San Gabriel Valley area of Los Angeles. She received her Ph.D. in English from Cornell University. She graciahas taught at UC Santa Barbara, UC San Diego, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She is currently an Associate Professor of Chicano and Liberal Studies at Cal State University, Los Angeles. Her research and teaching are centered on the topics of contemporary feminisms, women of color, cultural studies, and Chicano/Latino/Latino American social movements. She has written widely on these issues and most recently co-authored the anthology Enriqueta Vasquez And the Chicano Movement: Writings from El Grito Del Norte (Arte P�blico Press, 2006). DARE TO DREAM: THE AFRICAN AMERICAN EXPERIENCE: EMPOWERING PARENTS, EMPOWERING COMMUNITY

UCSD will host its second annual "Dare to Dream College"event, a major gathering intended for African Americans in San Diego.  This year's event will be centered on empowering parents with the latest information on keeping their children on track for higher education (four-year college, or community college), especially in these times of social and economic challenges.This is a free, hands-on event and will include experts from not only UCSD but also motivational speakers and presenters in education from San Diego's African American community. FREE ANONYMOUS HIV TESTING ON LIBRARY WALK
Thurs. Oct. 30 | 9AM-3PM 
The San Diego County Office of Public Health will be providing free, anonymous rapid HIV Testing on Library Walk to staff, faculty and students between the hours of 9:00 am and 3:00 pm. on Thurs. October 30th.  Look for the Mobile Unit between Career Services and Student Health Service.  The rapid HIV test detects HIV via oral swab; no blood sample is needed.  Counseling services and further testing will be available for those with preliminary positive results.  Appointments last 20-30 minutes.  Most appointments for the rapid HIV test will be on a first-come, first served basis.  However, a limited number of reservations for appointment times are available by going to the student health website:  http://studenthealth.ucsd.edu  and scrolling down to the Helpful Links section.  Any questions please call Debbie at 858-534-2419.

Welcome to Tanish LA'Shawn Burrus!
 
Newly Appointed African American Studies Minor Program Coordinator Tanisha LA'Shawn Burrus. Throughout her career in the private sector and in academic institutions, Tanisha L. Burrus has consistently displayed her dedication to educational excellence in outreach and advising. Tanisha joins Thurgood Marshall with a plethora of insight in program development, outreach and recruiting. As coordinator for two Trio programs (federally funded programs which provide assistance for individuals
from disadvantaged backgrounds who have the potential to succeed in higher education) at Mills College in Oakland, CA and Cal State San Marcos in San Marco, Ca, Tanisha provided workshops and recruiting tactics which grew the programs tremendously.  She also worked as the Director of Education for Sylvan Learning Center and Admissions Coordinator for the Rady School of Management here at UCSD. Tanisha graduated from Long Beach Poly High School and earned a Bachelor degree in History from the University of California, Davis. She is a wife and mother to two sons. Tanisha is not only well rounded in her home and career, but impacts her community as well by mentoring a diverse group of young adults, to aide them in unlocking their potential and operate in their purpose.
