Islamic Law and the Challenge of Islamophobia

Professor Abou El Fadl is widely acknowledged as the leading authority on Islamic Law in the U.S. and a major contemporary Islamic thinker. As a strong proponent of human rights, he serves on the Advisory Board of Middle East Watch and previously on the Board of Directors of Human Rights Watch. This Burke Lecture is co-sponsored by the UCSD Dean of Arts and Humanities, the Center for the Humanities, the Middle East Studies Program, the Department of History, and the Institute for International, Comparative, and Area Studies (IICAS).

1st Queer & Asian Conference
Saturday, May 3rd at UC Berkeley
Berkeley's 1st Queer and Asian Conference will be held on Saturday, May 3rd, 2008. The theme is Story-ing the Silence: Filling the Pages. The conference will be a day for community building and networking; a place to explore the intersections of identity, and share stories as individuals and as a community.

Addressed from multiple perspectives, and with a deep-seated attention to the lived experiences of the participants in the room, the session will explore both past realities, current situations and potentials for future change. Cultures within departments, political dynamics, and individual effectiveness will be examined and explored. By honoring UCSD's Principles of Community we continue to maintain an excellent workforce, and the session provides a space to hone the skills necessary to maintain and enhance this work.

    Nominate someone outstanding for the All People's Celebration!
     
    The Cross-Cultural Center will host its 13th annual All People's Recognition Ceremony on Friday, May 23, 2008 at 5:00 PM. The goal of the Ceremony is to recognize campus individuals who contribute their time, effort, and energy to increase multicultural understanding at UCSD and in the surrounding community.

    We believe these people have helped the CCC to fulfill its mission of "building community from the ground up."

    All People's Celebration is a chance to recognize their contributions. Please take this opportunity to nominate someone (student, staff, faculty, or community) who you feel has contributed to diversity and community at UCSD.

    Outing Racism
    On May 3rd at 10am, an incredible experience awaits at the LGBT Resource Center.
    The stakes are high and the mood is set.  The 2nd part of the Outing Racism series focuses on Anti-Racist Practice. The mission is to take action in our spaces and create a social justice environment that challenges us to start with ourselves.  There will be delicious food, group discussions, anti-racist workshops and activities along with relational experiences.
    The task is challenging and emotive, passionate and necessary.

    Wednesday, May 7: Hidden Voices - The Lives of LGBT Muslims
    Speaker: Faisal Alam, 5:00pm at Mandeville Center East
    This presentation aims to dispel myths about Islam, a religion that is commonly misunderstood in today's world. By exploring the complex diversity within the Muslim world and by illustrating the many challenges facing queer Muslims, this presentation will bring new light into the lives of an often invisible and silent community: Muslims who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and questioning.  

    Thursday, May 8: Transgender Tea Party
    5:00pm at LGBT Resource Center
    The Transgender Intersex Alliance (TIA) and the LGBT Resource Center are hosting a "T"-Party! Here, "T" stands for "Transgender", so we will have a panel discussion with members of our transgender community, who will be sharing their stories and their lived experiences. All members of the LGBT community and our allies are welcome to attend. Formal English high tea, finger sandwiches, and petit fours will be served.
     
    Friday, May 9: Julia Serano and Anniversary Celebration
    4:00pm, with reception immediately following, Eucalyptus Point
    Come join us for Julia Serano's spoken word performance! Julia Serano is an Oakland, California-based writer, spoken word performer, trans activist, and biologist. Julia is the author of Whipping Girl: A Transsexual Woman on Sexism and the Scapegoating of Femininity (to be published by Seal Press in June, 2007), a collection of personal essays that examines the ways in which misogyny frames many popular stereotypes and assumptions about transsexual women. Julia's performance will be followed by an Anniversary Celebration to honor the LGBT Resource Center's second year in its permanent home. Refreshments will be served.

    The Intergroup Relations Program is currently recruiting students to join our 2008-09 "igroup team!" 
    A total of five paid positions are available including two Peer Educators, one Student Coordinator for Outreach, one Student Coordinator for Events, and one Director for the Social Action Theatre Troupe.  All positions start at $9.50/hr. (Director at $11.00/hr.)

    Nominate an Outstanding Senior

    The Outstanding Senior Awards will be given out at the All Campus Celebration on June 19 to a graduating senior and graduate student who have earned the admiration of the UC San Diego community for exceptional contributions to university life. The winners will be awarded $1000 each and a lifetime membership to the UC San Diego Alumni Association. Members of the UC San Diego community (students, faculty, staff, and alumni) may nominate up to three students for the awards. Nominations are due in the Office of the Vice Chancellor-Student Affairs FRIDAY, May 9, 2008 by 4:30 p.m.
