A poetry reading by Lynne Thompson from her latest award winning collection:  Beg No Pardon. Seed of Mango, Seed of Maize
Seed of Mango, Seed of Maize, the title of a poem written by Lynne Thompson, perfectly captures the breadth and depth of African Americans today.  Ms. Thompson is the featured speaker for the Social Science and Humanities Library's Black History Month Program.The title, the cadence, and the words of her poem all speak to the diasporas of African Americans that we salute with Black History Month.Come hear Ms. Thompson read her poems and chat with the audience.

Ethnic Studies Winter '08 Colloquium Series

Thursdays from 3-4:30pm in SSB 107 

With the general theme of "Racial and Natural(ized) Disasters," we hope the series will provide a global/transnational portrait of how the mechanisms of racial subjection inform both the ways in which the various  'causes' of such disasters -- ecological, medical, political (wars, refugee flows, etc)-- impact populations of color and their places of residence and the official and public responses to them.

RhymeFest! An Evening of Slammin' Poetry featuring Southeast Asian Poets

BAO PHI has been a performance poet since 1991. A two-time Minnesota Grand Slam champion and a National Poetry Slam finalist, Bao Phi has appeared on HBO Presents Russell Simmons Def Poetry, and a poem of his appeared in the 2006 Best American Poetry anthology. Check him out online

BRYAN THAO WORRA is a Laotian American poet and community activist living in Minnesota. He is the literary editor for Tripmaster Monkey Magazine and Bakka Magazine, and is also an advisor to AsianAmericanPoetry.Com and a freelance writer for Asian American Press. Check him out online.

·  9:00 am sharp: Meet at the San Ysidro Trolley Station. We will walk together, cross the border gate and travel to our locations in Tijuana using chartered buses for transportation.
· 9:45-10 am: The crosses at the border: more than 4,000 immigrants have died trying to cross the international border
· 10:30-10:45 am: Metales y Derivados-Otay Industrial Park
· 11- 11:30 am: Ejido Chilpancingo-Rio Alamar neighborhood
· 11:45 am-12:00 pm: Sony
NOTE: We will visit Tijuana industrial area but won't enter any factory.
· 12:30-1:00 pm Lunch at Cittac's office
· 1- 3 pm: Cittac's office (Cittac: Centro de Informacion para Trabajadores y Trabajadoras; Workers' Information Center): Struggles and labor conditions in the maquiladoras
· 3:30 pm: Return to San Ysidro border line

· Donations cover the bus, lunch, and a donation to Tijuana worker organizations

    Until the Violence Stops Film Screening

    vdayUntil the Violence Stops features playwright and activist Eve Ensler in a powerful film that documents how The Vagina Monologues grew into an international grassroots movement called V-Day to stop violence against women and girls.  Until the Violence Stops shows women from Harlem to Ukiah, California; from the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation to the Philippines and Kenya, uniting and courageously revealing their intimate and deeply painful experiences with abuse ranging from rape to female circumcision. This year marks the 10th Anniversary of the V-Day movement.  Since 1998, thousands of V-Day events have taken place all over the world.  Join the cast and crew of UCSD's 2008 production of The Vagina Monologues at the screening of this hopeful and inspiring film.     The Coming Out Group is a place to meet and gain mlkparadesupport while discussing your sexual and/or gender identities in a confidential setting.  This group is for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, straight or questioning folks who are coming out and who may already be out.  Topics are deter-mined by group participants, and  can include coming out to yourself, coming out to family, coming out to friends, coming out and the work place, and coming out at school.  If you are interested in joining this group, please email Jan.

    Feb. 13 at 11:30am in the Revelle College Plaza Cafe. Dimensions of Blackness: Essence of Music, Dance and Culture will include gospel, ballet, and break-dance performances.
     
    Feb. 14 a 2pm in the Price Center Ballroom. The 2008 Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Diversity Awards program will recognize faculty, staff, students, departments or organizational units that have made an outstanding contribution at UCSD in the past year.

    Feb. 21 at 3:30pm in the Social Science Building, 101. Gene Perry, will conduct an Afro-Caribbean Percussion Workshop.

    Feb. 20 at 7pm in the Price Center Plaza. Let It Flow - Soulful Night at Sixth College will include an evening of poetry, hip hop dancing, art displays and traditional soul food.

    Feb. 22 from 4-6pm. UCSD an "Evening with the Stars". UCSD alumni of color will tell their stories and network with current students.

    Feb. 23 at 10:30am in the UCSD Faculty Club. The Sixth Annual Black Scholarship Brunch will honor UCSD student scholars. Choirs including the UCSD Gospel Choir will perform. Proceeds will benefit undergraduate scholarships at UCSD.

    Feb. 28 at 4:45pm in the International House Great Hall. Global Gourmet, African cooking class and sampling of African cuisine.

    Hispanic Scholarship Fund
     
    HSF scholarship applications for the 2008-2009 academic year are now available online.
     
    General eligibility requirements are as follows:
    • Be of Hispanic heritage hsf
    • Be a high school senior, undergraduate or graduate college student
    • Be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident
    • Have a minimum 3.00 cumulative GPA
    • Must apply for federal financial aid using the FAFSA
    • Must plan to enroll FULL-TIME in a degree seeking program at a U.S. accredited institution in the 2008-2009 academic year.

    2008 IICAS Human Rights Fellowship
     
    The Institute for International, Comparative, and Area Studies is pleased to announce the annual competition for student fellowships with human rights organizations. Fellows will receive $3,500 each. These awards will enable students to carry out clearly defined fieldwork, domestically or internationally, with human rights organizations related to a student's area of study.
     
    The purpose of the fellowship is to provide students with an opportunity to contribute to the work of human rights organizations while also gaining practical experience that may influence the students' areas of research or academic focus. The fellowship program welcomes multi-disciplinary approaches to human rights fieldwork. Visit our website for more information and application procedures

    Apply for Udall Scholarship
     
    The Udall Scholarship for $5,000 seeks to reward undergraduates who are involved in tribal governance or tribal health issues.
    Criteria:
    • Current 2007-08 sophomores or juniors, or 5th year seniors in 2008-09
    • US citizen or permanent resident
    • 3.0+ GPA, and a member of a tribe or band.

    Recipients must agree to attend the Udall scholar orientation weekend, Aug. 2-6, in Tucson, Arizona (expenses paid).

    Critical Race Studies Symposium

    The CRS Symposium, "Race, Sexuality & the Law: Abercrombie, Imus & Beyond" will feature
    interdisciplinary academic panels exploring the role of law, culture,media and communities in shaping representations of race, gender and sexual orientation.

    The Symposium convenes over 300 people from law schools, ethnic studies and race-related research centers, graduate and undergraduate
    programs, law firms, legal services organizations and community-based social change agencies from across the country.
