Focus on our ministry partners

Your congregation, through the Ohio Conference, has 13 ministry partners that provide vital health and human services or quality higher education to folks in Ohio and beyond.  Each of these partners, also known as benevolent institutions, has stories to tell about the people whose lives they have touched.  We will share those stories with you each month in Connections for the next year or so.

We hope you'll enjoy these snapshots of United Church of Christ ministries.  Our focus this month is on Back Bay Mission in Biloxi, Mississippi.  Read on below.

Back Bay Mission
builds affordable homes
Model home in Bethel Estates
Back Bay Mission in Biloxi, Mississippi realized a long-held dream September 9 when it cut the ribbon on the first completed single-family unit in its Bethel Estates affordable housing development in Pass Christian.

Stifling, 90-plus-degree temperatures and heavy humidity did nothing to smother the spirits of the crowd gathered for the historic occasion. An all-day open house permitting prospective homebuyers to tour the completed model, and an unfinished larger one was planned for Saturday, September 11.

The Bethel Estates development began shortly after Hurricane Katrina, when approximately 70,000 homes were destroyed, available housing quickly diminished, and rents went sky-high.  Affordable housing became a major recovery issue.    More

Urgent Need for Church World Service Kits

Church World Service buckets

Floods and tornadoes have almost depleted the Church World Service supply of clean up buckets, personal care, and school kits.

These kits are a great gift to people in need.

and places to ship

On October 9, kits can be dropped off at Otterbein College in Westerville, Ohio.  A CWS truck will be at the Festival of Sharing, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.  If you live nearby, bring your kits to Otterbein and save the shipping costs.

Pakistan flood survivors need food, shelter and other basics now!

Massive flooding in all four provinces of Pakistan has killed more than 1,700 people and left millions homeless and hungry.  Church World Service is distributing food and tents for tens of thousands of families in dire need.  And, CWS mobile medical teams are providing emergency care.

CWS has worked in Pakistan for more than five decades and is coordinating with other groups on immediate and long-term recovery needs.

 Tips from the Triathlon

I skipped church last Sunday to compete in my first (and last) Ironman Triathlon.  It's one of those "bucket list" things.

The event was the Revolutions 3 Triathlon staged at Cedar Point Park in Sandusky. It consisted of a 2.4 mile swim in Lake Erie (which I did with my ankles strapped together), a 112 mile bike race (handcycle, for me), and a full 26.2 mile marathon (for which I used a racing wheelchair).

The clock was running for all three events. I entered the lake at 7 a.m. and finished the overall event at 10:30 p.m., in a time of 15 and a half hours. It was, to say the least, a long day.

The low point came at mile 40 of the 112 mile bike ride.
