Peacemaking Moment
from Kathy Guisewite
Teaching at-risk four-year-olds, Kathy Guisewite wanted to share the meaning of International Day of Prayer for Peace in a subtle way with her students. She did this by reading them the story of Ferdinand the Bull whose most favorite thing to do is sit in his meadow and smell the flowers.
One afternoon, Ferdinand gets stung by a bee that makes him buck and race across the field. His display is so fierce and powerful, that he is chosen to go to the ring, and face a bull fighter. Peace-loving Ferdinand admires the flowers in the ring, but like a true pacifist would not attack even when provoked. In the end, he is retired back to his meadow and flowers.
At the end of this story, Kathy asked the children, "So how do you feel about fighting?" They all responded, "No, it's bad. You shouldn't fight!"
Then she asked, "But what happens if you don't want to fight, but someone wants to fight you? What should you do then?"
And a tiny voice suggested, "You should smell them!"
