GSA Doubles the Federal Hybrid Fleet, DOE Takes the Lead in Updating to Hybrids - President Obama announced that the Federal Government will lead by example in replacing older cars in the federal fleet with fuel efficient hybrids and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. DOE article

 
Department of Energy to Invest Nearly $18 Million for Advanced Biofuels User Facility - U.S. Department of Energy Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Cathy Zoi announced plans to build an advanced biofuels process development facility aimed at speeding the commercialization of advanced biofuels. DOE Releases Federal Fleet Management Guidance - The fleet guidance highlights a number of ways Federal agencies can reduce petroleum consumption by reducing vehicle miles traveled, increasing fleet fuel efficiency and switching to lower GHG-emitting and alternative fuels. The aim is to meet President Obama's call to reduce petroleum fuel use by 2 percent each year from 2005 through 2020, for a total 30 percent reduction. DOE article

Mexico City offers bike sharing program in clean air campaign called Ecobici - the new program has installed 1,100 bikes at 85 stations throughout the center of the city. In its first three months, 4,000 people have paid for user cards they swipe at a rack to release a bicycle for a half-hour. The project is part of Plan Verde, a $1 billion-per-year program which also calls for an energy efficient bus system, once-a-week no-drive days for all cars, and subway system improvements. NSF/DOE Partnership on Thermoelectric Devices for Vehicle Applications
NSF and DOE seek research proposals with transformative ideas that will impact national needs and priorities in energy conservation and climate change. Letters of Intent due 5/21/10, final deadline 6/22/10. More information

U.S. China Clean Energy Research Center (CERC)
This Center will facilitate joint clean energy R&D by teams of scientists and engineers from the U.S. and China, as well as serve as a clearinghouse to help researchers in each country.   Deadline 5/14/10.  More information

US Department of Agriculture Sustainable Bioenergy Program
The Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) Sustainable Bioenergy Program will fund grants targeting the development of regional systems for the sustainable production of bioenergy and biobased products. Deadlines vary. More information

Alt Fuel Facility Design Competition
The Seattle District Corps of Engineers has a competitive design-build requirement for the Construction of an Alternative Fuel Facility, at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington. Consists of the design and construction of an alternative fuel station to include dispensing and storage for alt fuel systems. Deadline 5/14/10. More information

EPA's Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program
This program assists small businesses with no more than 500 employees to develop and commercialize new environmental technologies.. Deadline 5/11/10. More information

National Science Foundation Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program
The NSF is also offering SBIR Phase I funding opportunities for environmental technologies. Proposed topics include bioenergy technology, energy supply and use, and energy transportation and fuels. Deadline 6/9/10. More information

Methane Recovery
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency requests proposals for Activities that Advance Methane Recovery and Use as a Clean Energy Source.  $5 million is expected to be available for up to 35 awards. Deadline 7/29/10.
