Diocesan Events

 

Licensed Eucharistic Visitor Training A one-day training for all who want to take the Eucharist to homebound people. Required for all diocesan LEVs. Saturday, March 24, 9a-3p at St. John's, Chula Vista. $15 includes lunch and materials. Register by emailing  Becky Lawton by Friday, March 16. Include "LEV" in the subject line of your email. Concert to Benefit Interfaith Shelter Network Monday, March 26 at 7:30pm at Point Loma Nazarene University. This classical performance features San Diego symphony musicians and includes a solo piano performance by Dr. Paul Kenyon, and an exciting duo by San Diego jazz greats Joshua White and Ellen Weller. Proceeds benefit the Interfaith Shelter Network, now in its 26th year of providing shelter and other
services to homeless individuals and families and transitional housing
for homeless battered women with children. Suggested donation $25 per person. Free parking is available. Tickets available at the door. More Info

 

Via Crucis to the Border Monday of Holy Week, April 2. This pilgrimage to the border will highlight the plight of immigrants even as we remember that our Lord was an immigrant. Travel the way of the cross with members of both the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles and our own diocese. Bishop Suffragan Diane Bruce and Bishop Mathes will lead us in prayer. The day begins at 8:30am at MacArthur Park, 2230 W. 6th St., Los Angeles. You may also join at St John's, 760 First Ave., Chula Vista at 1:00pm or at Friendship Park, at the border of the U.S. and Mexico, at 2:15pm. For more info, contact the Rev. Jennifer Hughes.

 

Interfaith Community Footwashing This quarterly service project of the Diocesan Service Coalition takes place on Maundy Thursday, April 5 at the Episcopal Church Center, 2083 Sunset Cliffs Blvd., 10a - 1p. We will wash the feet of homeless people in Ocean Beach at the Center, where they will also be able to connect with social services that will help them long-term. Fragile Earth Symposium All are welcome to attend this symposium about caring for our earth, as a church, as individuals and as a community. Join the conversation as we think about how to exponentially decrease our carbon footprints in an effort to honor God's creation, this fragile earth, our island home. Legacy Evensong Bishop Mathes will host the first Bishop's Legacy Society Evensong on Sunday, May 6, 2012 at 5pm at St. Paul's Cathedral. For those who have remembered an Episcopal church or ministry in their estate plans. Godly Plan/Catechesis Support Network Forming

 

Does your church offer Godly Play or Catechesis of the Good Shepherd?  Would you like to learn more about these wonderful programs for children? We are forming a local support network that will gather periodically for training, trading notes, sharing materials, and inspiration. Timely Tax Info

 

Tax Credit Available to Small Employers The small employer tax credit is available again this year to employers with less than 25 employees that provide health insurance benefits to their employees.  Some of our churches filed the necessary paperwork last year and were successful in receiving a credit on their payroll taxes.  For more information, please see the CPG memo on the credit available on the diocesan web site.

 

2012 Tax Guide The 2012 Tax Guide for Episcopal Ministers is now available on the diocesan web site. This guide provides information to clergy on filing their 2011 tax return.

 

 

Lenten Events 

 

The Lenten Fast: A Hunger for God All are invited to a Lenten Quiet Day at St. Michael's by-the-Sea on Saturday, March 24 from 8:45 am to 12 noon in the chapel. Fr. Peter Guilianotti, rector of The Orthodox Church of St. John the Wonderworker, will conduct meditations.Sign up by Thursday, March 22 by calling the church: 760-729-8901, or signup online. 

 

Lenten University 2012 Join St. Bartholomew's, Poway for an opportunity to learn more about five world religions - Buddhism, Islam, Hinduism, Judaism and Christianity. Wednesdays at 6pm. For more information, please call 858-487-2159.

 

Cathedral Stations of the Cross Every Friday in Lent in the Cathedral, we will meditate on the Stations of the Cross for 30 minutes beginning at 6pm. All are welcome to participate in this ancient practice that retraces Christ's journey to his crucifixion. Dramatic final meditation on March 30. Temecula Stations of the Cross followed by a soup and bread supper and community outreach presentation begins at 6:30 pm on the Fridays of Lent. March 16 is a special version of the Stations for the sick. Presentations include: March 16 - Packing Dignity Bags for those rescued from human trafficking; March 23 - Habitat for Humanity; March 30, Dorcas House. Going Green Recycling Event Help the ministries of St. Mark's and help yourself at the same time! Get rid of used and broken electronics such as computers, monitors, cell phones, chargers, cords, televisions, mp3 players, ink cartridges, printers, microwaves, laptops and all electronics on Saturday, March 17, 10a - 4p. Spring Break Vacation Bible School Trinity, Escondido invites you to join their VBS, Mon-Fri, April 2-6, 9a-12p, at Trinity.This week coincides with Holy Week and is an excellent opportunity to include children in the life of the church. VBS ends with a Good Friday observance to take place in Grape Day Park in Escondido. Elementary school age children are invited to participate, and teens are invited to help lead. Spring Fling Talent Celebration Held at St. Thomas of Canterbury, Temecula on Saturday, April 21, beginning at 1pm. Rarely Heard Renaissance Works Cappella Gloriana, San Diego's professional chamber choir, presents a Lenten-themed concert of two rarely-performed Renaissance works on Saturday, March 24 at St. Paul's Cathedral, 7p. Lenten Lauds Come and experience Lauds on Saturday mornings in the Cathedral chapel at 9a, except March 17. Lauds is a quietly beautiful and peaceful ancient monastic office (prayer time) that draws the church together in prayers and praise at the start of the day. All are welcome! Beyond Our Diocese

 

Crossing Over: Borderlands as Blessing; Immigration as Opportunity Engage in dialogue and action around our current border and immigration challenges, April 12-14, 2012. The Most Rev. Katharine Jefferts Schori will participate as a guide as she delivers an important address prior to the 7th annual "God Has No Borders" procession at the Naco border. We will process from Arizona into Mexico as a show of unity and mutual respect with all in God's kingdom.
