Beloved, to Thee I raise my whole being,
a vessel emptied of self. Accept, O Lord,
this my emptiness, and so fill me with
Thy Self --- Thy Light, Thy Love, Thy
Life --- that these Thy precious Gifts
may radiate through me and over-
flow the chalice of my heart into
the hearts of all with whom I
come in contact this day,
revealing unto them
the beauty of
Thy joy
and
Wholeness
and
the
serenity
of Thy Peace
which nothing can destroy.

Diocesan Briefs
Wine Tasting for El Salvador

wine glass
Wine tasting and a silent auction to benefit the Diocese of El Salvador.

Join us for an evening of wine tasting as we welcome the bishop of the Diocese of El Salvador, the Rt Rev. Martin Barahona and Noah Bullock, the executive director of Foundacion Cristosal, the non-profit organization that supports the Salvadoran diocese. All are welcome! Bring your friends!

Funds raised will support programs that empower young women in gang territories and community organizing in shanty communities on the outskirts of San Salvador.

There will be a wine tasting and silent auction of typical items made in the communities Cristosal works with (e.g. kites, pottery, hammocks). Please enjoy this opportunity to speak with Bishop Barahona, and learn more about our companion diocese of El Salvador. Noah Bullock will give a brief presentation about Cristosal's hands-on work. Questions? Please contact Alexandra Howard

Formed for Mission: Learning about Baptism, Confirmation and the Teaching Church

Jordan River sm
Crossing the Jordan: come hear about fresh ideas for our Church.

Join Bishop Mathes as he shares the fruits of his sabbatical. While at Virginia Theological Seminary, our bishop focused his studies on the rites of baptism, confirmation and exploring ways to be a teaching church.

As a scholar-in-residence, he began a manuscript that is now being edited for publication. The book explores what it means to baptize, to confirm and particularly to initiate adults into these ancient rituals. Come hear about his studies, thoughts and ideas for the future.

This is an opportunity to respond to the bishop's work and give your input. Join in the conversation. All are welcome. For more information, contact Bobbi Hoff.

Learn about the new Denominational Health Plan

episshieldAll people of the diocese are invited to attend a meeting to learn about the new Denominational Health Plan (DHP) as passed by the 2009 General Convention. The plan speaks to social justice issues around providing adequate benefits for the Church's lay employees. The new initiative also translates into cost savings as a result of economies-of-scale purchasing and the optimization of provider and prescription drug discounts. The new plan in our diocese will take effect January 1, 2013. Prior to that, we would like to spend time in conversation about the new plan and what it will mean for your congregation's bottom line.

Please attend one of the following meetings particularly if you are wardens, treasurers, parish administrators or rectors. If you have questions, contact Diocesan Treasurer and Canon for Finance Julie Young,  619-481-5453.

Women, War & Peace, a PBS mini-series and study guide

women war peace"What if you looked at war as if women mattered?" That's the premise behind a PBS mini-series called Women, War & Peace. The film producer is Abigail E. Disney.

Anglican Women Empowerment hosted a conversation with Disney on September 16 at the Desmond Tutu Center in NYC. The series begins October 11 and runs on five Tuesdays.

The series "spotlights the stories of women in conflict zones from Bosnia to Afghanistan and Colombia to Liberia, placing women at the center of an urgent dialogue about conflict and security, and reframing our understanding of modern warfare."

Narrators include Matt Damon, Tilda Swinton, Geena Davis and Alfre Woodard.

Preview videos and more information are at the PBS website.

Anglican Women's Empowerment (AWE) encourages you to download this study and use it in your congregation.

Photography: what makes a good picture and how to snap one
edie sanchez city scene
"City Lights," by photographer Edie Sanchez. Come learn from a pro!

All are welcome to join the next Communicators' Lunch featuring the world-renowned photographer, Edie Sanchez. Her work has appeared in newsletters and magazines for Save the Children, Episcopal Community Services, neighborhood associations and schools. She has been a part of group shows in London, New York and San Diego and her work is currently on display in the First Republic Bank in La Jolla.

Come learn the basics from an expert, and bring your camera, batteries and fresh memory card. This will be a hands-on workshop!

Photography impacts your newsletters, bulletins, posters and online materials far more than you know. Come learn about how to take photos that stop people and grab their attention.

"I strive for two things when making my images," says Sanchez,  "first, to move people and tell stories, such as my work with Save the Children and ECS. I hope that my images tell human stories that will elicit emotion and perhaps serve as a call to action. Secondly, my photographs are a way to share my moments of delight - those times when the sunset is perfect, when a person's expression tells a whole story, when a landscape or animal or child delights you and everything else disappears."

Edie currently lives in La Jolla and serves on the Board of ECS.  She is a member of the LA Associates of Save the Children.

Blessing of the animals at St. Thomas of Canterbury

Pets are blessed at St. Thomas, Temecula.

St. Thomas of Canterbury Episcopal Church will hold its fifth annual Blessing of the Animals on Saturday, October 1, at 10:00 am. The event is in honor of St. Francis of Assisi, patron saint of animals.

All animals, not just pets, including horses and other large animals, are welcome to attend, along with their owners.

"As usual everyone needs to be reasonably well-behaved, so leashes, crates and cages will be in order," said the Rev. Robert Nagy, vicar of St. Thomas. "Horses will be blessed in the courtyard."

St. Francis pet medals will be available for purchase. Gifts of money and pet supplies will be most welcome and all donations will go to support Animal Friends of the Valleys.

The short service welcomes not only members of St. Thomas, but all other friends and neighbors who wish to bring their animals for a blessing and experience the joy of this annual event. For more information, contact Lew Wood.

Beyond Our Diocese
Bishop Sauls' presentation to the House of Bishops

why reform slide
A slide from Bishop Sauls' presentation to the bishops about reforming the Episcopal Church.

Bishop Stacy Sauls is the newly named chief operating officer of the Episcopal Church. He made a provocative presentation about reform to the House of Bishops in Ecuador on September 19.

"The presentation represents thoughts and ideas that have been growing for a long time and in conversation with many other people throughout the church," Sauls said, "but they are not intended as being presented as anything other than my own."

In his presentation, Sauls asked for a broad discussion and examination of the Episcopal Church's governance mechanisms, funding, and resource allocation. Addressing the concerns of dioceses and citing examples, he illustrated the need for reform through charts and graphs.

Sauls presented options for discussion, including collaborative solutions and concrete funding suggestions.

He also presented model resolutions, asking that the bishops return to their dioceses and discuss the proposal with their elected deputies to General Convention 2012.

He concluded with a faith statement: "The people of the Church want to engage in God's mission. The people of the Church want to participate in decisions about engaging God's mission. The people of the Church want to fund God's mission."
