Join us for an evening of wine tasting as we welcome the bishop of the Diocese of El Salvador, the Rt Rev. Martin Barahona and Noah Bullock, the executive director of Foundacion Cristosal, the non-profit organization that supports the Salvadoran diocese. All are welcome! Bring your friends!

Funds raised will support programs that empower young women in gang territories and community organizing in shanty communities on the outskirts of San Salvador.

There will be a wine tasting and silent auction of typical items made in the communities Cristosal works with (e.g. kites, pottery, hammocks). Please enjoy this opportunity to speak with Bishop Barahona, and learn more about our companion diocese of El Salvador. Pastoral Teaching from the House of Bishops

This week the Episcopal Church House of Bishops, meeting in Province IX, in Quito, Ecuador, issued a Pastoral Teaching on our stewardship of the earth. It says, in part:

"Affirming the biblical witness to God's abiding and all-encompassing love for creation, we recognize that we cannot separate ourselves as humans from the rest of the created order. The creation story itself presents the interdependence of all God's creatures in their wonderful diversity and fragility, and in their need of protection from dangers of many kinds. This is why the Church prays regularly for the peace of the whole world, for seasonable weather and an abundance of the fruits of the earth, for a just sharing of resources, and for the safety of all who suffer. This includes our partner creatures: animals, birds, and fish who are being killed or made sick by the long-term effects of deforestation, oil spills, and a host of other ways in which we intentionally and unintentionally destroy or poison their habitat."

The Anglican Covenant

anglican covenant

By the Rev. Bill Zettinger, deacon at St. Bartholomew's, Poway

One of the blessings of being an Episcopalian is that we are part of a worldwide Anglican Communion. The Communion is comprised of over 85 million members in 44 regional and national member churches that reside in 160 countries.

In October 2003 The Lambeth Commission on Communion was established by the Archbishop of Canterbury at the request of the Anglican Primates (bishops) in response to developments in North America with respect to same-sex relationships.  The mandate requested consideration of ways in which our understanding could be enhanced where differences threatened the life of the worldwide Church. In short, how does the Anglican Communion address relationships between its component parts in the spirit of communion?

Classes and Workshops
Progoff Intensive Journal Workshop

progoff logo

Developed by Dr. Ira Progoff, this system of linked reflective writing exercises moves people through their history of outer events, inner symbolic events and resources; guiding them into dialogues with the significant persons and works of their lives.

Built from his study of the lives of creative people this is a non-judgmental, non evaluative process to generate energy and momentum towards the recognition of new paths and wholeness in the journaler's life.

The first in the series, 'Life Context' introduces people to the methods of the journal. It helps you to gain a perspective and to "loosen the soil of your life" by recollecting memories of events and experiences that have shaped your life. Other aspects of the workshop:

  • Develop fresh awareness of themes and convictions that bridge the periods of your life.
  • Recognize possibilities and interests yet to be explored.
  • Develop insights about major areas: Relationships with other persons; career and special interests; body and health.
  • Find meaning in life: begin to apply Progoff's concepts of spirituality to your life.
The second part is also a two-day workshop; it will take place at the cathedral on October 29 and 30, 2011. To register, or for more information, visit the St. Paul's Cathedral web site. Questions? Contact the Rev. Canon Allisyn Thomas.

Dignity and Diversity: anti-racism training

diversity

This invaluable workshop explores what culture is and why we have cultural differences; cultural differences' impacts on leadership; theological reflection on multicultural leadership; and developing a spirituality for leadership in a diverse, changing world.

The training fulfills  the requirement for anti-racism training for all clergy, professional staff and those elected or appointed to positions of leadership on committees, commissions, agencies and boards, in compliance with general convention resolutions.

The Rev. Eric H. F. Law, an ordained Episcopalian priest, will lead the training. He founded the Kaleidoscope Institute, in order to develop competent leadership in a diverse, changing world. He is an internationally known consultant and trainer in multicultural ministry and building inclusive communities. He is also a photographer, playwright, and composer.

Join us for Moving Planet
earth love
Moving Planet: a global day of action.

As people of faith we need to stand up and witness to our commitment to a more sustainable world!  Moving Planet is a global day of action to move the world away from fossil fuels and demand solutions to the climate crisis.  A large coalition of religious institutions and environmental groups (including St. Paul's Cathedral Simpler Living group) is sponsoring two events in San Diego.

From 10:00am to 11:00am, St. Paul's Episcopal Cathedral will host EarthKeeping: an Interfaith Dialogue. Representatives of various faith traditions will discuss their beliefs in terms of caring for and protecting creation, especially in light of the climate crisis.

Moving San Diego to a Clean Energy Future, a march and rally will follow from 11:00am to 1:00 pm just across the street in Balboa Park.  The 1.2 mile march will conclude at the Sports Museum with speakers, including Congressman Bob Filner (D-CA).

More about both events can be found at the coalition's website. For more information, contact Masada Disenhouse  619-335-1265 or Phil Petrie 619-298-0464.

Blessing of the animals at St. Thomas of Canterbury

Pets are blessed at St. Thomas, Temecula.

St. Thomas of Canterbury Episcopal Church will hold its fifth annual Blessing of the Animals on Saturday, October 1, at 10:00 am. The event is in honor of St. Francis of Assisi, patron saint of animals.

All animals, not just pets, including horses and other large animals, are welcome to attend, along with their owners.

"As usual everyone needs to be reasonably well-behaved, so leashes, crates and cages will be in order," said the Rev. Robert Nagy, vicar of St. Thomas. "Horses will be blessed in the courtyard."

St. Francis pet medals will be available for purchase. Gifts of money and pet supplies will be most welcome and all donations will go to support Animal Friends of the Valleys.

The short service welcomes not only members of St. Thomas, but all other friends and neighbors who wish to bring their animals for a blessing and experience the joy of this annual event. For more information, contact Lew Wood.
