God of all races, nations, and religions,
You know that we cannot change others,
Nor can we change the past.
But we can change ourselves.
We can join You in changing our only
And common future where you 'reign'
The same over all.
Help us not to say, "Lord, Lord" to any tribal gods,
But to hear the One God of all the earth,
And to do God's good thing for this One World.

Wine Tasting for El Salvador

wine glass
Wine tasting and a silent auction to benefit the Diocese of El Salvador.

Join us for an evening of wine tasting as we welcome the bishop of the Diocese of El Salvador, the Most Rev. Martin Barahona and Noah Bullock, the executive director of Foundacion Cristosal, the non-profit organization that supports the Salvadoran diocese. All are welcome! Bring your friends!

Funds raised will support programs that empower young women in gang territories and community organizing in shanty communities on the outskirts of San Salvador.

There will be a wine tasting and silent auction of typical items made in the communities Cristosal works with (e.g. kites, pottery, hammocks). Please enjoy this opportunity to speak with the Most Rev. Martin Barahona, and learn more about our companion diocese of El Salvador. Noah Bullock will give a brief presentation about Cristosal's hands-on work.

Responding to 9-11 from the heart

IRC balboa park
The Interfaith Religious Council of San Diego responds to 9-11 with prayers, music and celebration of diversity.

Last Sunday, on September 11, the San Diego Interfaith Council hosted a memorial service and concert in Balboa Park's Organ Pavilion. The theme was "Responding from the Heart;" all remarks were geared toward encouraging the audience to embrace and promote acceptance, understanding, respect and dignity for people of all cultures and religions. The 90 minute program included spiritual music from many faith traditions, including Tyko drumming, and prayers from youth of different faiths.

"I think we all came away touched and with a little more love and understanding," said the Rev. Canon Wayne Sanders, canon for ecumenical relations in our diocese.

Did you know that more than 10,000 men, women and children are homeless in San Diego County every night? Be part of ending homelessness in San Diego, and ultimately, across America.

Join hundreds of people from all over San Diego in an all-night event to raise awareness of homelessness. The funds help thousands of local homeless men, women, and children put their lives back together.

Similar to a Walkathon, participants in Sleepless San Diego collect sponsorship donations from friends and family. All donations go to helping the homeless at San Diego Rescue Mission and other local non-profits serving the homeless and raising awareness of homelessness across the county.

Chanting Prayer and Breakfast

All welcome every third Saturday at 9am.

Come to listen or join the chanting. Lauds is a form of prayer that might be for you. Lauds is a quietly beautiful and peaceful ancient monastic Office (prayer service) sung in the morning. We're using the "Lauds and Vespers" book, so if you have a copy, bring it along. Come and listen (because it sounds amazing in the chapel) or sing along as the Spirit moves you. Afterward, join us at a nearby eaterie for brunch, so we can all get to know one another. For more information, contact Verdery.

Attention Youth Groups: Sell Firewood, Raise Funds!

firewood
Firewood from Camp Stevens can warm your home and raise funds for youth!

Last spring, Camp Stevens had two teams of AmeriCorps volunteers who spent weeks clearing our forest of dead or damaged trees. The whole space looks much cleaner and more beautiful now - AND we have a TON of firewood! We're looking to partner with churches and youth groups throughout the Diocese to sell the firewood as a joint youth group and campership fundraiser.

Beyond Our Diocese
Ministry Under the Cross in the 21st Century

Gather in beautiful Palm Desert with members of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America for a time of rest, refreshment, collegiality, worship and theological challenge. At the Professional Leadersʹ Conference of the Pacifica Synod, weʹll explore what it means to do ministry under the cross of Christ in the twenty-first century. As churches close and shrink and the impact of mainline Christianity seems to diminish, is there a word of hope, a word of good news? Might the message of the cross of Christ be our hope in these days? What to make of Saint Paul's words: "For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God." Hear renowned scholars Douglas John Hall and Mary Hinkle Shore explore the message of the cross and discuss ways in which "God's weakness is stronger than human strength."
