Our bishop, the Rt. Rev. James R. Mathes, is back from sabbatical and vacation. He is in the office Tuesdays through Thursdays. He always appreciates hearing from the people of the diocese. You can reach him via email or call 619-481-5450.
He writes,
"September is always a time of new beginnings that coincide with the start of the school year. There is a sense of gathering and renewal. This September, especially this Sunday, will be a particularly poignant time of gathering and reflection. In churches across the nation and in our own diocese, we will remember the events of September 11, 2001. We will remember those who died on that day, especially those first responders who rushed into the inferno to save others.
Unfortunately, tens of thousands more have died since that fateful day, in two protracted wars that seem unending. Collateral damage seems to be ubiquitous -- abiding peace one of the casualties. It is particularly providential that our gospel lesson for this Sunday, September 11, includes Peter's question about the number of times we should forgive and Jesus' answer, 'Not seven times, but, I tell you, seventy-seven times.'
As followers of Jesus, we do well to remember this Sunday. We must pray for those who have perished and for peace. And we must nurture a spirit of forgiveness. For in the end, that is the only way to peace."

9-11 Remembrance Evensong
 All people of the diocese are invited to attend a solemn Evensong in honor of those who died ten years ago on September 11, 2001. This will be a time of reflection and remembering as well as praying for peace and fostering hope for the future. The St. Cecilia Girls Choir will sing. Prayers for healing will be available after the service. A memorial reception will follow in the Great Hall. San Diego Interfaith 9-11 Memorial and Concert
 A coalition of San Diego faith leaders will hold "Responding from the Heart" - an interfaith memorial service and concert program on Sunday, Sept. 11, 2011 to commemorate the tenth anniversary of 9/11. Free and open to the public, the event will take place at the Balboa Park's Spreckels Organ Pavilion. Emceed by local media personality and author Kathi Diamant, the ceremony will feature spiritual musical performances and readings by children of diverse faiths.
There will be taiko drums from the Japanese Buddhist tradition, Gyatri Mantra from the Hindu tradition, a hymn from the Sikh traditions, hymns from the Christian tradition, a Jewish choir and beautiful prayers from around the world.

Service Coalition Summit: October 1
 Calling all Service/Outreach coordinators! We are having our second Service Summit on Saturday, October 1 at St. Bartholomew's, Poway and hope you can join us!
The Service Coalition is comprised of service/outreach coordinators from Episcopal churches throughout our diocese. We'd love to have every congregation represented in our group! Our purpose is to create a network of service/outreach coordinators, to build relationships among parishes, to enhance joint outreach projects, and to brainstorm and problem solve outreach efforts and challenges.
The morning will be an all-hands discussion and after lunch we'll meet in smaller groups to network and brainstorm around specific outreach efforts.

Attend this one-day training to learn about the history of the role, customs and canons, substituting for the clergy and much more. Sleepless San Diego
Did you know that more than 10,000 men, women and children are homeless in San Diego County every night? Be part of ending homelessness in San Diego, and ultimately, across America.
Join hundreds of people from all over San Diego in an all-night event to raise awareness of homelessness. The funds help thousands of local homeless men, women, and children put their lives back together.
Similar to a Walkathon, participants in Sleepless San Diego collect sponsorship donations from friends and family. All donations go to helping the homeless at San Diego Rescue Mission and other local non-profits serving the homeless and raising awareness of homelessness across the county.

Dignity and Diversity: anti-racism training
 This invaluable workshop explores what culture is and why we have cultural differences; cultural differences' impacts on leadership; theological reflection on multicultural leadership; and developing a spirituality for leadership in a diverse, changing world. The training fulfills the requirement for anti-racism training for all clergy, professional staff and those elected or appointed to positions of leadership on committees, commissions, agencies and boards, in compliance with general convention resolutions. The Rev. Eric H. F. Law, an ordained Episcopalian priest, will lead the training. He founded the Kaleidoscope Institute, in order to develop competent leadership in a diverse, changing world. He is an internationally known consultant and trainer in multicultural ministry and building inclusive communities. He is also a photographer, playwright, and composer. The children of Dorcas House proudly present an exhibit of their art and writing projects. Dorcas House is a foster home in Tijuana supported by our cathedral and many congregations throughout our diocese. Room wanted near Old Globe Theater
A family friend of our past bishop, the Rt. Rev. Gethin Hughes, is looking for a room to rent for four or five nights. She's an actress in the show, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, at the Old Globe Theater in November-December. She lives in Orange County and would like to be able to stay in San Diego four to five nights per week for the duration of the show.

God in America Bible study series - starts tomorrow!
How Religious Liberty Shaped America
For those who know that in America religion matters, and for those who wish it didn't matter so much, St. Bartholomew's is offering a six week series "God in America" based on the PBS Frontline Series, the American Experience. Over a six week period the Rev. Bill Zettinger will explore with you the sweeping history of how religious faith has shaped America. The format will be 60 minutes of video and 30 minutes of discussion.
The topics for the first three weeks are: "A New Adam" September 7; "A New Eden" September 14 and "A Nation Reborn" September 21. Part II of the series will continue in October on the 5th, 12th and 19th. Join the Rev. Bill Zettinger for what will be lively discussions on how religious faith and belief have forged America's ideals, molded our identity and shaped our sense of mission at home and abroad.

American Red Cross Seminar on Personal and Community Preparedness
 Do you know what to do if a wildfire threatens your home and family? What about a house fire, earthquake, or flood? Come to St. Timothy's and learn how you can prepare for these common disasters. The San Diego Chapter of the American Red Cross will provide a thirty minute presentation on disaster preparedness, including how to assemble an emergency kit and make a family communication plan. Mozart Requiem as 9-11 Memorial
Join the Bach Collegium San Diego for their two performances of the Mozart Requiem to mark the tenth anniversary of 9/11. First performance is at St. James by-the-Sea on Friday, September 16 at 7:30pm. Second performance will be at Point Loma Nazarene Universtiy (Crill Hall) on Saturday, September 17 at 7:30pm.

Trinity Episcopal Church presents Arts Alive 2011, an Evening with Richard Lederer to benefit youth programs. The evening will include word play and laughs with Richard Lederer, famous lexicraftologist, author, and humorist; a silent auction with art from local artists; and hors d'oeuvres plus dessert. Elizabeth Smider was a faithful member of St. Timothy's Episcopal Church in Rancho Penasquitos. She developed a rare form of breast cancer and after a courageous struggle, died in 2008. Read her story here.
At the spectacular UCSD International House Great Hall from 5pm - 11pm, supporters will enjoy an evening of local wine, microbrews, dinner and live music while raising funds to support the fight against breast cancer, especially aggressive and rare breast cancers.

Thinking of going green? Webinars and $$ Help!
For the past year, the Episcopal Church has been in partnership with GreenFaith, a leading national religious environmental group, to assist churches of all sizes in their efforts to "go green" through a certification program.
The GreenFaith Certification Program is a two-year, holistic process engaging an entire congregation through education, worship, environmental justice advocacy, building and grounds, and developing relationships with the larger interfaith community.
The Economic/Environmental Affairs Office and GreenFaith are underwriting 50% of the tuition for churches, enabling them to enroll for a discounted cost of $250 - $750. Churches in the program receive guidance and support, including one-on-one mentoring, resources, free webinars, and peer support.
Application deadline for tuition subsidies for the program is December 1, 2011. For more information about the subsidies, visit the web site.

Everyone, Everywhere Conference on global mission
Congregations, individuals and dioceses can gain much from the extensive global and domestic mission work of the Episcopal Church at the special four-day conference, Everyone Everywhere 2011.
"The heartbeat of the church is mission," Episcopal Church Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori said. "The Episcopal Church is increasingly committed to engagement in mission partnerships within and beyond our borders.
Representatives from throughout the Episcopal Church and other provinces of the Anglican Communion will lead discussions on the theme, Where is your place in Mission?
