The Land of the Rising Sun
Devastation as a result of the earthquake and tsunami.
|
As we see the pictures of devastation wrought by earthquake, fire and tsunami, our hearts ache for the people of Japan. It remains to be seen the full impact of this catastrophe but it appears to be immense.
I ask you to hold the people of Japan as well as all others affected by this disaster in your prayers. Knowing that financial assistance will be needed I also ask you to make a gift to Episcopal Relief and Development so that our church can respond as Jesus would have us do - as good Samaritans.
Contribute to the Japan Response Fund
Japan is a beautiful and resilient country whose gracious hospitality I have been privileged to enjoy. It is often referred to as the land of the rising sun.
May God touch this part of God's creation with a spirit of new life so that out of the ashes may rise new life and new hope.

School for Congregational Leadership
Over 100 people attended Saturday's pragmatic sessions at All Souls' in Point Loma.
|
Dynamic. Informative. Good presentations. Useful. Excellent.
These are some of the ways people described Saturday's session at All Souls' in Point Loma. Over 100 people came to the School for Congregational Leadership, a day of pragmatic workshops geared toward new vestry and bishop's committee members.
Bishop Mathes opened the day with an address about leadership. Morning workshops were titled "Vestry 101," "Stewardship 101," and "Finance and Administration 101." Roundtable discussions covered wardens, vestry, treasurers, communicators, administrators and clergy. Afternoon sessions focused on "Handling Conflict," "Building Resources in Your Church," "Top Ten Things You Need to Know about Finance and Risk Management," and "Staying Out of Trouble and the New Title IV."
The Rev. Mike Russell, rector of All Souls' personally cooked the lunch and helped serve it. The day closed with reflections on the day and closing prayers.
"This was common sense, thoughtful, loving advice," said one parishioner from St. Peter's, Del Mar. "It was excellent footing for a new vestry member."

Why Tweet?
"Here are three good reasons.
First, Twitter is the most comprehensive 'pulse' of digital information today. If you want to know what digitally-oriented people are thinking and talking about now, it's the best tool.
Second, Twitter is personal. You can find terrific reporting in the New York Times or The Atlantic, but on Twitter you can hear directly from Egyptians during the uprising in Tahrir Square, or from Cisco's chief technologist about what cloud computing means to her.
Third, tweet because you have something to say. Everyone has topics they're passionate about and insights to share. Clay Shirky calls this your cognitive surplus. You can learn an enormous amount on Twitter, and others can learn from you."
Excerpted from The Atlantic Monthly article, "The Bare Bones Guide to Twitter."
