Author: Steve Berkman
What the publisher says:
Uncovering the World Bank's loan programmes in the developing world, author Steve Berkman finds nothing but mismanagement and hypocrisy. Using internal reports and memos, project documents and the Bank's Annual Reports as reference, Berkman demonstrates management's obsession with lending despite the high fiduciary risks involved. Painting a picture of an institution that is run by a bloated bureaucracy, this book proposes changes that will rouse the Bank from its bureaucratic complacency and restore its central mission of alleviating poverty.

Surrogates of the State
|
Surrogates of the State: NGOs, Development and Ujamaa in Tanzania
Author: Michael Jennings
What the publisher says:
Explores the delicate relationship between development NGOs and the states they work in, using an exhaustive and illuminating case study of Tanzania in the 1960s and '70s. During that time Tanzania instituted the Ujamaa programme, resulting in the forced resettlement of 6 million people to villages, transforming the map of the country. Rather than questioning this policy, NGOs working in the area became surrogates of the state, helping to carry out the programme.
About the author:
Michael Jennings is a lecturer and researcher in East African politics, and the politics of development. A major focus of his work has been on the role of voluntary agency activity in development in East Africa, including NGOs, missions and faith-based organizations more widely. He is interested in the multiple roles which "development" as a process and as an idea takes on, and the synergies between power, politics and development in the North and South. He has worked extensively on the role of civil society in development, and has research interests in health issues in sub-Saharan Africa.

Futurecast 2020

Futurecast 2020: A Global Blueprint Author: Rob Shapiro
What the publisher says:
A radical reassessment of the future by a former advisor to Bill Clinton and Al Gore.
A seismic prophecy and plan for our age. What will the world be like in twelve years? Robert Shapiro predicts a world unmatched by anything in history. Rapid technological advances, globalisation, unparalleled ageing of most societies, and the rise of China and America's status as sole superpower mean that we are entering an unprecedented age. Shapiro employs his immense experience in international politics and economics to sketch a blueprint for the coming fifteen years, tracing the path combined global forces may lead us down. This is neither hopelessly idealistic nor an Armageddon: Shapiro is persistently lucid, penetrating and even-handed in delineating the world as it stands and predicting the way it will walk.
'Rob Shapiro's prescient and insightful book probes the confluence of challenges that society will face in the coming years. He argues that our world has become increasingly interdependent, and we must foster global cooperation to achieve a sustainable existence with equal opportunity for all. Futurecast is a vital resource for anyone seeking to understand the world our children will inherit' - Bill Clinton.

China and America

China and America A Time of Reckoning
Author: Charles Dumas
What the publisher says:
Two years ago Charles Dumas foretold an economic crisis. He was right. Now, in the timely sequel to the prophetic Bill from the China Shop, he outlines alternative reckonings: devastating economic consequences or another path to greater global prosperity...
In his last book, The Bill from the China Shop, Charles Dumas predicted how the Asian savings glut would force-feed US mortgage borrowing to excess. China and America points to the next risks, incisively analysing the current credit crunch and the possible devastating economic consequences, while also outlining an alternative path to greater global prosperity.
In America the credit crunch is likely to be followed by an economic downswing, led by housing, but with weakened household wealth and confidence prolonging the pain. US policy-makers seem impotent against the backwash from past debt excesses, and much of what the Federal Reserve does simply worsens the problem.
Meanwhile China's explosive exports are feeding through to overheat the domestic economy. Inflation is accelerating fast. Yet Beijing can only fight it by unpopular repression of domestic demand or finally letting China's yuan soar, and its domestic savings flow overseas.
A severe cutback in China's growth seems likely. If the Chinese authorities allow major yuan appreciation and progressively freer overseas investment, both the Chinese and world economies could rebalance quite easily. But if Beijing maintains a stubborn defence of the cheap yuan and control over its citizens' savings, the global outlook is set to be very much darker.
'In 2005 incoming Fed chairman Ben Bernanke argued that a global saving glut is causing the huge US current account deficits. Charles Dumas recognised this truth long before him. This splendid book explains how Asia's surpluses are driving US households ever deeper into debt and why this unsustainable process must end in tears.' Martin Wolf, Financial Times
'Essentially it says that at some point soon western consumers' confidence will falter, and those people will do what the Third World did a generation ago, default on a grand scale...Not a comfortable book, but one that everyone should take an afternoon to read.' Anthony Hilton, Evening Standard
About the author:
Charles Dumas has been Head of the World Service at Lombard Street Research since 1998 and is one of the world's leading macroeconomic forecasters. He was previously a journalist at The Economist, an economist at General Motors and J. P. Morgan, and then managing director in JPM's M&A department in New York.

Global Economic Prospects 2008

Global Economic Prospects 2008 Technology Diffusion in the Developing World
Author: World Bank
What the publisher says:
Examines the state of technology in developing countries and the pace with which it has advanced since the early 1990s. This book reveals both encouraging and cautionary trends. This year's Global Economic Prospects comes on the heels of an extended period of strong growth and a 15 year period of strong performance in much of the developing world, which has contributed to substantial declines in global poverty. While high oil prices and heightened market volatility may signal a coming pause in this process, over the longer term continued technological progress should continue to push back poverty.
