Sappi Tree Spotting Cape
Sappi Tree spotting capeSappi Tree Spotting Cape: From Coast to Kalahari

Authors: Val Thomas, Rina Grant, Eugene Moll

What the publisher says:

There are dozens of books that focus on specific areas of the Cape, or on specific types of plants that occur there. None of the simpler publications for the general public have tackled the integration of vegetation regions and the distribution of woody plants of this diverse area. Sappi Tree Spotting Cape successfully explores the wonder of trees and shrubs from the rocky dry Richtersveld in the west, through the Kalahari sands and the spiky survivors of the arid Karoo. It includes the Proteas and the towering giants of the forests of the south.

The series, and now this last book, can make a difference on so many levels:
  • They keep the terminology simple.
  • They show you the right place to look for the right tree.
  • They ID the striking features. These trees do not need a complex system of "keying" because they are instantly recognisable.
  • The other four books are Sappi Tree Spotting Lowveld, Bushveld, KwaZulu-Natal and Eastern Cape and Highveld.

The Full Circle
Full CircleThe Full Circle

Author: Dave Varty

What the publisher says:

As a schoolboy, Dave Varty was passionate about two things: playing cricket and the family's bushveld farm, Sparta, on the edge of the Kruger National Park. Set up as a hunting camp when their grandfather bought the land in 1926, the four small mud rondavels became the Varty brothers' holiday home and the base camp for a lifetime of learning and adventure. When his father died Dave was fifteen and the family was left in a precarious financial position. Selling the family farm was the sensible option but the maverick Varty brothers had a vision. Less than two years later and with only R62 in the bank, Dave and his brother John started a safari business and Sparta became Londolozi - 'the protector of all living things' - and a journey began that would change the conservation landscape across the African continent.

In what grew to become a personal quest to save the last remaining wilderness areas of Southern and East Africa, and to grow the reach of his ecotourism business, Dave learnt invaluable life lessons along the way. His has been a voyage of discovery and rediscovery - bringing him full circle, from the owner of small family-owned and operated game lodges to tourism mogul and conservation kingpin, and now, finally, back to Londolozi, his original family farm.

Part memoir, part motivational manifesto, The Full Circle is Dave Varty's story, a story told with passion, hope and humour. Filled with anecdote and drama, success and failure, Dave sweeps his readers along with him in his determination to track a path for others to follow and to find workable solutions for conserving wild spaces in a complex and crowded world. He reminds us of the sheer grit that is required to follow your calling and the sacrifices needed to make the world a better place for wildlife and, ultimately, for mankind.

Ban the Plastic Bag
Ban the plastic bagBan the Plastic Bag - A Community Action Plan for a Carrier Bag Free World

Author: Rebecca Hoskins

What the publisher says:

Plastic bag litter is lethal, killing over 100,000 seabirds, dolphins, seals, whales and turtles every year. In May 2007, Modbury in South Devon became Britain's first plastic bag free town. This book uses the Modbury story as a call to action, entreating every village, town and city  to follow Modbury's example.

About the author:

A leading campaigner in the fight to rid the UK of plastic carrier bags, cameraperson Rebecca Hoskins encountered the destruction caused by carrier bag pollution first hand while filming marine life for the BBC. The sight of the sea filled with plastic and dying sea animals inspired her to persuade the town traders from her hometown of Modbury to stop using carrier bags. Modbury is now plastic bag free.

Hot, Flat and Crowded
Hot, flat, crowded
Hot, Flat and Crowded

Author: Thomas L Friedman

What the publisher says:

Thomas L. Friedman's no. 1 bestseller The World Is Flat has helped millions of readers to see globalization in a new way. Now Friedman brings a fresh outlook to the crises of destabilizing climate change and rising competition for energy - both of which could poison our world if we do not act quickly and collectively. His argument speaks to all of us who are concerned about the state of America in the global future. Friedman proposes that an ambitious national strategy-- which he calls Geo-Greenism - is not only what we need to save the planet from overheating; it is what we need to make America healthier, richer, more innovative, more productive, and more secure. As in The World Is Flat, he explains a new era - the Energy-Climate era - through an illuminating account of recent events. He shows how 9/11, Hurricane Katrina, and the flattening of the world by the Internet (which brought 3 billion new consumers onto the world stage) have combined to bring climate and energy issues to Main Street. But they have not gone very far down Main Street; the much-touted green revolution has hardly begun. With all that in mind, Friedman sets out the clean-technology breakthroughs we, and the world, will need; he shows that the ET (Energy Technology) revolution will be both transformative and disruptive; and he explains why America must lead this revolution.

About the author:

Thomas L Friedman is one of the world's most influential journalists. He has a twice-weekly column in The New York Times, and was recently named (by the Financial Times) the single most influential journalist in India. He has won three Pulitzer Prizes for his journalism, and is the author of the world-wide best-sellers From Beirut to Jerusalem, The Lexus and the Olive Tree and The World is Flat.
