"What is Consciousness?"
Quantum Consciousness, the Myers/James Filter Theory, and how it relates in practice. With Sean McCutheon and Matt Willett
Join us for a multimedia presentation about consciousness, a 15 minute meditation, and, as always, a very lively discussion afterward.
East and west, many have tried to explain what consciousness is but nobody has a real answer, (neither do we!), but there are some interesting theories out there. Most of us know about the one explained in "What the Bleep?," as Quantum Consciousness. This will be discussed but most of us are not aware of the Myers/James Filter Theory of Consciousness. This theory is much more relevant for our spiritual practices and for understanding ourselves. We will focus on discussing this theory and explaining how we can use it in our spiritual practice. It also makes the most sense with all of the para-psychological data thus far.
Sean McCutcheon has had a long-standing interest in the study of consciousness, stemming initially from a series of visionary experiences occurring around the age of twenty, which propelled him on a long course of study in various philosophical traditions, both in academic and traditional settings; both in theory and practice. He has written and lectured on topics such as the mind-body problem, the interpretation of quantum mechanics, and the intersection of Western science and Asian philosophy. Sean is also is a long-time serious meditator--averaging over two hours per day for over twenty years--and has studied with some of the foremost living teachers of various wisdom traditions, including Vedanta Hinduism, Sufism, Taoism and several varieties of Buddhism. He earned a B.A. in philosophy from St. Mary's College of Maryland and an M.S. in computer science from Florida Tech, in addition to doing graduate work in Buddhist studies at Naropa University and in psychology at Antioch. His thesis research was on hyperspatial holography and his current work is in computational wave physics. When he has spare time, he practices visual art, music and kung fu. He lives in the Baltimore area. Suggested donation: $5
