Hello Baltimore IONS Members!
Our next monthly meeting is Monday, September 12, at 7 p.m., featuring:
Cosmic Evolution, Interplanetary Ethics, and Astrobiology with NASA scientist, Mark Lupisella
Mark Lupisella, PhD, is the co-editor of Cosmos and Culture: Cultural Evolution in a Cosmic Context. His presentation will focus on interdisciplinary sciences such as astrobiology and interplanetary ethics that lift the study of evolution beyond the boundaries of planet Earth! His work sheds light on how to better search for habitable planets, how we might relate to species outside our solar system if we found them (or if they found us), and how we might relate differently to our own planet if we were to view ourselves as citizens, and active participants, in an evolving cosmos.
Mark has worked on the Hubble Space Telescope, Mars "terraform" planning, human spaceflight exploration, and areas of astrobiology such as planetary protection, artificial life, and broader societal issues of astrobiology such as ethics and worldviews. He has also worked on space governance issues and co-founded the Horizons Project which aims to improve humanity's ability to address long-term survival and development challenges.
Mark holds a B.S. in physics, an M.A. in philosophy (emphasis in Philosophy of Science), and a Ph.D. in biology (program in Behavior, Ecology, Evolution, and Systematics) from the University of Maryland at College Park.
Coming In October:
Saturday, October 22, 2011 10AM - 6:30PM
IONS Fall Gathering
Where: Maryland Presbyterian Church

Enjoy an experiential day of science and spirit!
NOW is the time, WE are the people. During these trying times, we are called to bring forth a larger, non-local, optimistic self. Activating our best selves requires us to grow along with each other with courage, inspiration, and fun. Our day will be a time to learn, use both sides of our brain, stretch the imagination and have fun in a welcoming, supportive environment. There will be lectures plus personal hands-on experience.

Spontaneous Evolution, by Bruce Lipton

Spontaneous Evolution offers you the information, inspiration and invitation to participate in the greatest adventure in human history - conscious evolution!
Economic meltdown ... environmental crisis ... seemingly endless warfare. The world is in critical condition.
We've all heard stories of people who experienced seemingly miraculous recoveries from illness, but can the same thing happen for our world?
According to pioneering biologist Bruce H. Lipton, it's not only possible, it's already happening. We are surrounded by the proof that we are poised to take an incredible step forward in the growth of our species. In Spontaneous Evolution, this world-renowned expert in the emerging science of epigenetics teams up with political philosopher Steve Bhaerman to offer a new and hopeful story about humanity's evolutionary destiny.
Spontaneous Evolution reveals how changing our understanding of biology and human history will help us navigate these turbulent times, and invites readers to reconsider:
- The unquestioned pillars of biology including random evolution, survival of the fittest, and the role of DNA;
- the blueprint for our sustainable, life-affirming future that is literally inside you - encoded in each of the trillions of cells comprising your body
- how our beliefs about nature and human nature shape our politics, culture, and individual lives; and
- how each of us can become planetary "stem cells" supporting the health and growth of our world and every individual in it.
Spontaneous Evolution is 20% off at breathe books for IONS members.
We hope to see you at these IONS events! Please invite your friends to join us! IONS meetings are open to the public and we love having new people attend.
