Hi All!
Our new book clubs are really going strong! What a great way to create community and discuss books. Join in today, meet new people and read books you may have never come across. We are choosing books that may not have crossed your path before. It's always exciting to discover a new author, make a new friend, and enjoy a lively discussion.

Book chat and snacks (and usually giveaways as well) -- what could be better! Each month we'll discuss a new book, exploring everything from fiction to graphic novels to nonfiction, focusing on books that raise interesting and important questions. Or books that I just really like.

At our next meeting, Sunday, March 14, 5:15 p.m., we'll discuss Scott Westerfeld's Uglies. In a future that doesn't seem that far off, Tally Youngblood finds that asking one seemingly small question turns her world upside-down and inside-out. This is one of my favorite reads to discuss, because there are so many interesting things to tackle. Westerfeld juggles politics, body image, and self-respect in a fast-paced, engaging novel (the first in a series).

Cost: $7; snacks will be served! Group picks are 20% off for bookclub members. Please sign up in advance.

Our third title is The House of the Spirits, by Isabel Allende. This magical tale describes the tangled web of love, politics and family intrigue in South America. This is Allende's first novel and I was mesmerized when I read it. I lived in Jerusalem at the time and remember feeling like I just didn't have enough time to spend in the deeply mysterious and dramatic world Allende created. I'm so happy to revisit it now, 14 years later!

Since this book is over 400 pages long, we'll take two months to read it. Please try to read the first 200 pages for our discussion on Saturday, March 27. We'll read the rest of the book and continue the discussion at the April meeting.

I hope you find this book as intriguing as I did. By the way, after I chose it I remembered it was made into an incredible movie with Glenn Close, Meryl Streep, Winona Rider, Jeremy Irons and Antonio Banderas among others! I don't see any harm in renting the film! I just want you to enjoy.

Read more about the movie and book here. And read about Isabele Allende here.

Bookclub, bagels and coffee (or tea) cost: $9.
