Iride e Emilia

THE HUFFINGTON POST
Fern Siegel

"A different kind of adaptation -- a play-within-an-opera - is now at The Cell, a new multi-arts facility at 338 W. 23 St. Tosca e Le Altre Due (Tosca and the Two Downstairs) is a satiric sidebar to Puccini's Tosca, written by Italian playwright and actress Franca Valeri, who imagines a clever back story to the famed production, smartly performed by Kairos Italy Theater, a bilingual Italian/English troupe.

In the opera, Mario, Tosca's lover, is tortured by Sciarrone, the deputy of Scarpia, the corrupt police chief. In Valeri's sister tale, Sciarrone's wife Iride (Marta Mondelli) and Scarpia's doorkeeper Emilia (Laura Caparrotti, who also directs) sit together. Amid the tortured screams in the background, the two discuss their lives and each character in Tosca -- all the while plotting Iride's escape from her brutal spouse.

Iride is rendered with exquisite charm by Mondelli, who is nicely balanced by Caparrotti's gruff but crafty Emilia. Tosca e Le Altre Due is humorous and insightful, a novel way to comment on Puccini's examination of politics and passions. Kairos, dedicated to spreading Italian culture abroad, has achieved its aims here. The production and company are worthy of note."

ESSENCE OF ITALY
Carolyn Masone

"I had the pleasure of a rare theatric experience on Wednesday night, February 3 at The Cell theater in NYC. A gem of a production, Tosca E Le Altre Due by Franca Valeri presents themes of socio-economic class differences, social mores, relations between the sexes and the consequences of personal and civic violence, just to name a few. All of this is presented through the lens of biting social satire as we watch two women meet and unfold their lives against the backdrop of Puccini's Tosca, going on all around them. [...]

Laura Caparrotti and Marta Mondelli play two women from different worlds who are united by the violence in their lives. Each has different reasons for being there and each ultimately decides differently about her future. If it sounds like a heavy, dark story, it is in a way. But the beauty of Valeri's writing and Caparrotti and Mondelli's acting is that as you're watching the play it seems light and at times quite funny. The deeper story streams from the seeming triviality of their conversations and the interruptions of the Tosca story unfolding all the while.

This show is a great way to be introduced to, or continue to appreciate, Valeri's work."

From Time Out NY: Franca Valeri puts Rosencratz and Guildenstern spin on Puccini's classic opera by imagining what the torturer's wife and the lady-doorkeeper must have been saying while all that melodramatic stabbing was going on upstairs.

KIT's mission is to create a cultural exchange program between Italy, the US and the international community, to unveil artistic and creative sides of these two countries to the world. In the States, Kairos Italy Theater is dedicated to spreading the Italian Culture and to creating an Italian Cultural Network in order to support and further increase the knowledge of Italy in the States.

Kairos
According to ancient Greeks, Kairos was the god of the "fleeting moment," "a favorable opportunity opposing the fate of man." Such a moment must be grasped (by the tuft of hair on the personified forehead of the fleeting opportunity); otherwise the moment is gone and cannot be re-captured (personified by the back of head being bald). A concept similar to Kairos is that behind the famous motto "Carpe Diem" and a sort of recurrence in the idea of Kairos is linked with the theme of The Wheel of Fortune, which continuously rotates.

Once upon a time... KIT!
Many years ago (I was still in Italy) I have started my own theatre company with some friends, all actors like me. We decided to call us with the temporary name of Le Gramaglie, which was fun, but didn't feel completely right. Then one day, in Rome (my city), while I was walking through an exhibition dedicated to the Greek  scolptur Lysippos, I have discovered a fascinated figure, Kairos, which Lysippos replicated a lot.

Kairos was a semi-god, with a lot of hair in the forehead while completely bold in the back. He simbolized the right occasion grabbed at the right moment: in fact, you can grab it when it's coming (the hair in the forehead), but when it's gone, you won't catch it anymore... I found the concept to be beautiful, an hymn to life lived at full, an exhortation to grab the chance, even when it looks risky, just because your heart says that is the right one.

This is the very simple reason I have called my company Kairos, and when I have came to the States, I have just added Italy to better show what the company was about.
After so many years, I can say that I was right: I took many chances, and I still do, and it's still very beautiful and rewarding!
