Discover Italian Literature with KIT!
KITCAFFE' @ THE CELL Sunday October 25th, 2009 The Cell 338 W 23rd Street 6:30-8:30pm
To celebrate the Italian Month, KITCAFFE' will bring you back to the 60s, to discover everything you should know about LA DOLCE VITA, and you don't yet...
Focus on Dolce Vita's authors: Ennio Flaiano + Tullio Pinelli + Federico Fellini
Writer, essayist, playwright and screenwriter Ennio Flaiano will bring us in Via Veneto in the 60s. Ennio Flaiano was friend and collaborator of Tullio Pinelli, Federico Fellini among many others. With them, he spent legendary nights in Via Veneto, and with them he co-wrote masterpieces such as La Dolce Vita, Cabiria Night's, I Vitelloni, La Strada, 8 e 1/2.
To celebrate the most famous Italian lifestyle as well as the collaboration among these three artists, we'll read pages from I Diari di Via Veneto (The Via Veneto Papers) by Ennio Flaiano, and from the screenplay of La Strada by Flaiano, Pinelli and Fellini.
All the readings are presented in English followed by the Italian version.

SAVE THE DATE!Tosca e le Altre Due coming up February 2010!
To our friends and to all Franca Valeri's fans, we are very excited to announce that Emilia and Iride will be back on stage in New York in February 2010! A perfect way to warm your hearts and to spend some very entertaining winter evenings!
Tosca e le Altre Due by Franca Valeri
With Laura Caparrotti and Marta Mondelli
Synopsis:
XIX Century: the porter's lodge of the Palazzo Farnese is dominated by Emilia, who is responsible for upholding both the house's decorum and the reputation of the powerful and wicked baron Scarpia. Emilia is married to Nando the jailer of the Castel Sant'Angelo. She is a strong housewife who doesn't get easily upset over the constant shouting and somewhat shady affairs of the palazzo. One night Iride sneaks into the porter's lodge. The woman is a former lower-class "artiste". She comes to pick up her husband, the galley-sergeant Sciarrone who is, late and that night, still at work. He is now busy at a very delicate job on the upper floor of Palazzo Borghese: he is trying to make Cavaradossi, Tosca's lover, talk. His techniques are considerably less than gentle, but Scarpia knows that this is an efficient way to shock poor Tosca, for whom he longs, into surrender. Emilia and Iride patiently wait for the end of Sciarrone's shift. The two women keep each other company, and their conversations lead to a hilarious parody of common people's life. Yet, there is more. Iride, in fact, is not there just to wait for her husband. Within their constant gossip they discuss their miserable daily life, and the moralism of the poor but ugly, and the Cavaradossi's tortured screams, the audience learns about deep secrets and dangerous plans. Amongst the outspoken conversations between Emilia and Iride are inserts of the actual opera performance. At daybreak, finally, Emilia and Iride say good-bye...
MORE DETAILS COMING SOON!!!

Kairos Italy Theater

KIT's mission is to create a cultural exchange program between Italy, the US and the international community, to unveil artistic and creative sides of these two countries to the world. In the States, Kairos Italy Theater is dedicated to spreading the Italian Culture and to creating an Italian Cultural Network in order to support and further increase the knowledge of Italy in the States.
Kairos According to ancient Greeks, Kairos was the god of the "fleeting moment," "a favorable opportunity opposing the fate of man." Such a moment must be grasped (by the tuft of hair on the personified forehead of the fleeting opportunity); otherwise the moment is gone and cannot be re-captured (personified by the back of head being bald). A concept similar to Kairos is that behind the famous motto "Carpe Diem" and a sort of recurrence in the idea of Kairos is linked with the theme of The Wheel of Fortune, which continuously rotates.
