Understand the role and duties of a shop steward at the workplace

 

  • Role and responsibilities of shop stewards
  • Key Labour Court decisions on the roles and responsibilities of shop stewards
  • Industrial action (lawful means of resolving disputes)
  • Learning resources for shop stewards
  • Trade union member education

 

Facilitate effective interaction with management

  • The supervisor / foreman - shop steward relationship
  • Management - shop steward meetings
  • Effective workplace discussions (interpersonal role plays)

 

Understand the mechanisms of a grievance procedure

  • Roles and responsibilities of shop stewards
  • Effective representation in disciplinary enquiries
  • Effective evidence and argument
  • Statutory remedies for unfair workplace practices

Understand the mechanisms of a disciplinary code and procedure
