 Resurgence in cross-docking drives efficiency, speed-to-market
Cross-docking is a term that is almost self-explanatory. Inbound dock doors line up on one side of a long, narrow building, with outbound dock doors directly opposite, and very little in-between to impede product flow. The key is to immediately identify incoming truckloads of product, usually with bar code scanners, and then divert what product is needed to outbound trucks already being loaded.

 Seven packaging predictions for a resource-strapped future One of the driving themes at this year's Sustainable Packaging Symposium organized by Greener Package and the AIChE's Institute for Sustainability, was that the global marketplace faces some dire challenges in the near future. Food safety law advances role of traceability The most sweeping change to U.S. food safety laws in 70 years was enacted on Jan. 4, 2011, with passage of the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA).
Biomaterial use to quadruple by 2013 Global demand for biodegradable or plant-based plastic will quadruple by 2013. Rising oil prices and fossil fuel depletion is driving interest in the use of plant-based polymers.

The CPA 2011 Fall WorkShop, taking place November 7-8, 2011, at the Chicago Marriott Hotel in Rosemont, IL, is ideal for managers within your organization to acquire knowledge specific to the contract packaging industry, to reach suppliers of quality goods and services, and to network with industry peers in a hands-on educational environment. This is for CPA members only and will include multiple educational tracks with presentations focused on the hottest contract packaging topics, allowing attendees to build their own WorkShop learning experience.

Sharpen your staff's packaging skills with IoPP's "Fundamentals" course
Fundamentals of Packaging Technology, the well-received educational seminar in packaging from the Institute of Packaging Professionals (IoPP), is coming to Atlanta for the first time this fall. Contract packaging service providers and related companies that need more training in particular areas of packaging can sharpen their skills, and newcomers can gain a well-rounded look at the packaging profession. The program covers all aspects of packaging, with three-day sessions in late September and late October.
