Urgent Legislative Action Needed

Dear Chamber Members:

Below you will see a request to contact our Legislators along with the Senate and Assembly leadership urging them to add A3489/S1124 to the Assembly Budget Committee schedule for January 5th.  In brief, this bill known as the Bus Tax bill, taxes buses bringing visitors into New Jersey.  The reason for this is that buses fall under the same transportation tax code as motor freight where the tax applies to goods being trucked in and sold in New Jersey and the money being taken out of New Jersey.  In contrast, visitors coming by bus SPEND money in New Jersey.  Please follow the directions below to have this bill added to the January 5th Assembly Budget Committee schedule.

Thank you,

Vicki Clark

URGENT LEGISLATIVE ACTION NEEDED

Try as we have the final Assembly schedule for the 2010 session was released late Friday night and A3489/S1124 the bill eliminating the foreign corporation business tax on tour bus operators was NOT posted for a final committee hearing.  As you know the bill was voted on in the Senate with unanimous support and released from the Assembly Tourism Committee with a unanimous vote.  The bill was referenced to the Appropriations Committee and there it has stalled.  After many request by both the sponsors and our office the bill is not scheduled for a hearing on Thursday, the last day of committee hearings for the session.  This means, unless the bill is added to the Assembly Budget Committee schedule on Thursday January 5th, we will have to reintroduce the bill and have to start the process from the beginning.

We need to you contact both your legislator and the leadership of the General Assembly TODAY and ask them to add A3489/S1124 to the Assembly Budget Committee schedule for January 5th.

To contact YOUR legislator:

  • Go to www.njleg.state.nj.us
  • On the left scroll bar go to MEMBERS
  • Under members go to "find your legislator"
  • Search by either Alphabetical List or municipality

To contact Leadership:

  • Go to www.njleg.state.nj.us
  • On the left scroll bar go to LEADERSHIP
  • Under LEADERSHIP you will see the Speaker, the Majority Leader and the Budget Chair.
  • Please send them your request as well

Please indicate that the tourism industry needs this bill:

  • To become competitive with surrounding states.
  • That the current application of the foreign corporation business tax to tour bus operators is an incentive to either stop at the borders of NJ or to pass through the State because once a venue or activity in the state becomes a destination the tax applies.
  • The application of the tax is based on the miles a foreign corporation travels in the state vs. the amount of miles is travels in a given year outside of the state and that the tax is applied to a % of the overall income of the company.  A complicated and messy formula that is avoided by tour bus companies by not ferrying passengers into the State
  • That the fiscal note indicates that this is a non revenue issue and that the incentive to keep tourists out of the State and the revenue that is lost far out ways the benefits of the tax.
  • That all parts of the state benefit from the elimination of the tax and that the Casino Industry is suffering greatly because of the imposition of the tax to tour bus operators.
  • That while the foreign corporation tax was to capture those companies entering NJ to make a profit from pulling revenue out of the state from instate residents the tax application to the tour bus industry has the opposite effect.  It prohibits the ferrying in of consumers who spend money in the state.
  • Please add you own personal notes or experience based on what you have encountered when participating in travel shows and what you have heard from bus companies.

YOU MUST ACT TODAY

Submit Your Events for Inclusion on County-Wide Calendar of Events

In 2011, the Cape May County Chamber of Commerce re-designed the county-wide Calendar of Events into a glossy, easy to read brochure that was extremely popular with the visitors and locals, alike.  In fact, the 2011 calendar was so popular it was necessary to order an additional 10,000 copies in mid-July.

If you are interested in submitting your municipality, non-profit or FREE events, please follow the instructions below.  This year's deadline and the submission format are extremely important, so we ask that you refer to the format given below and submit your event listings by Wednesday, February 1, 2012 in a Microsoft Word Document. Event listing submission is to be made by email only to Sara Freeman at sara@cmcchamber.com.  Due to brochure space constraints, please provide only the following information for each individual event:

Date

Name of Event

Address of Event

Time

Fee ($) or Free

Website or phone Number (Your choice of which to be included)

* Events not submitted in this format will not be included in the

Governor Chris Christie will join the New Jersey Chamber of Commerce and hundreds of the state's political and business leaders at the NJ Chamber's 75th annual Congressional Dinner on January 26, 2012.

Please make plans to join.  Now more than ever the entire business community needs to tell our state leaders that we need them to continue the work that has started to turn New Jersey around economically.

Over 700 guests joined in last year and we expect at least that many guests again, so get your tickets now -click here to reserve tickets.

Sponsorship opportunities for the Walk to Washington are available - contact Amy Kolis at (732) 246-5730 or click here for more information.
