    August 2006

    Greetings!

We hope you've been able to enjoy some summertime rides, runs and/or splashes in cold water. Although we can't turn down the temps outside, we would like to provide you with some cool info. In this month's issue, learn how one of the best age-groupers in the country (and recent 70.3 champ) went from flab to fab; get some tips on flat tire prevention, and find out about a new product that will keep you smellin' fresh even when the temps top 100.

Coming Up: Don't miss our September issue which will feature training advice from six time Ironman World Champion, Mark Allen! And in October, former Austinite & 2x Ironman Champ, Michael Lovato, will give you his training tips. In the mean time, enjoy this issue and help spread the word: "Please be kind to cyclists."

    Interbike '06

"What in the world is Interbike?" You might be asking yourself right about now. Well, it's one of the largest bicycle trade shows in the world. This year the entire J & A staff will attend Interbike in Las Vegas between September 25-29. It's a chance for us to meet suppliers, learn more about the industry, and scope out new gear. We'll test ride new bikes (& maybe a mechanical bull), try on helmets, shoes, sunglasses and test out pumps among other equipment. What this means to you is a more knowledgeable J & A staff and new products and innovative designs for the upcoming year. Jack and Adam's will be closed on Tuesday, Sept. 26th and Wednesday, Sept. 27th for attendance of the show. We apologize for the inconvenience, but we promise to bring you back a lot of cool new products.

    Evoe Training 101
    with Patrick Evoe

If you want the secret to this sport, just go to Carnegie Hall...

I find myself frequently searching for the secrets to this sport. The more I explore, the more I learn, the closer I find myself to the answers. Each year?s experiences usher in new personal themes for the next year?s training and races. I find that as I slowly gain knowledge, I change my perceptions of this sport. After learning from friends, competitors, coaches, racing, and training, it?s become apparent that there is no secret. This sport is about consistency, but didn?t we already know that?

I?ve found there to be two schools of triathlon advice in articles and books: simple and complex. It seems that advice offered by the most successful athletes is often the most straightforward and logical, while other talking-heads seem to overcomplicate the issues. The most prolific thinkers in any field are those able to simplify the most complex matters. God gave Moses only ten rules for man to follow. Einstein simplified the relationship between mass and energy into five character equation. Our country is built on only three profound ?self-evident? truths: life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. In our sport, consistency is one of these fundamental virtues.

Reflecting on my fitness gains and growth over the last five years, I find that the underlying theme is consistency. I started my journey six years ago, 45 pounds heavier, and laboring to run a mile. Since then, my transformation and successes can be most attributed to consistency. It?s a simple process of building on incremental gains practice after practice, ride after ride, not giving up, not breaking the rhythm, taking a planned recovery week or taking a vacation, but NEVER falling off the wagon.

    Don't Monkey Around With Flats

Tired of monkeying around with flat tires? Then check out these prevention tips:

What's the number one cause of tire problems? If you guessed too little air pressure, then you're right. Having a good floor pump is essential in helping to prevent flat tires. The pumps usually include gauges and are made to inflate tires faster and easier than the pump you carry on your bike for emergencies.

It's also important to keep an eye on your tires for wear and tear. Road tires generally last about 1,500 miles when used on the rear and about twice that on the front. If you go any longer than that, flats are more likely to occur.

Besides watching for wear and tear, regularly check your tread for cuts and debris. Flats aren't always caused by outside objects. Sometimes the culprit is something sharp inside the rim. If the hole is on the "belly" of the tube (the same surface the valve is on), something inside the rim popped the tube. If the hole is on the outer surface, it was caused by something that penetrated the tire and tube.

For punctures on the tube's belly, make sure that the rim strip is fully covering the nipple holes and that it can't move out of position. If you find anything sharp on the rim, sand it smooth with a file or sandpaper.

If you follow all these steps and still suffer more than your share of flats, there are several additional options available, such as flat-resistant tires, tubes, and tire liners. Just ask and we'll discuss your tire trouble and recommend a solution to make flat tires things of the past.
