This week's focus point -

Momentum, change, and response.
I volunteer as an assistant basketball coach for the high school freshman team. Last week, we played a game where we had a 10 point lead with only 4 and a half minutes left in the game. We had played brilliantly. In the span of the next 2 minutes, our opponent drilled a couple 3-pointers, we turned the ball over, committed fouls that sent them to the free throw line, and all of a sudden found ourselves in a tie ball game. The last couple minutes were well played by both teams. In the final seconds, the other team made a basket to tie the score again. We inbounded and made an aggressive play to our end to make a shot to win it. Our player was fouled with 1.7 seconds left and calmly made the free throw to win the game.
Our coach could have called a timeout but chose to let the team play and make something happen. It was the right move. In business, momentum can change just as quickly. You can be on a roll, but a few bad "plays" on your end, good "plays" by others, and just dumb luck can turn things the other way in a hurry. Being able to respond quickly, make appropriate adjustments, take aggressive risks, and sometimes just let your game go, wil often lead to a victory for you.
One thing sports has taught me that translates to business is that the game is never over until that final buzzer sounds. Play hard, respond to adversity, and build momentum. Works on the court and in the boardroom.
