This week's focus point - | | General George McClellan |
I've been watching the award-winning Ken Burns documentary, The Civil War on Netflix. I'm a history buff, especially the Civil War era. One of the fascinating points involves the Union's "star" general at the beginning of the war, General George McClellan. McClellan had many opportunities to effectively finish the war in the early stages. He had advantages in manpower, weaponry, and geography. However, for whatever reason, McClellan refused to move. He was constantly wanting to get more men and dig in for "tactical" reasons. This drove President Abraham Lincoln crazy. All Lincoln wanted his general do was fight. McClellan's inability to move and fight extended the war for years as the Confederates were able to mobilize. It eventually cost him his job and legacy. It's a great lesson for business. How often do we procrastinate waiting to get all the information, or making sure everything is perfect? By doing this, we are like General McClellan - waiting in the trenches and not moving. This will eventually cause us to lose business, momentum, and success. Take a lesson from General Ulysses S. Grant instead. Fight, compete, and "move" every day. You will find this is the quickest way to win. This week's quote -"Business and life are about success, not perfection."- Alan Weiss
