Finding Your Talent and What That Means for Me
kangaroos

You may have noticed a new look, name, and feel to this newsletter. That's because just like me, it's time to "re-invent." Or actually, it's time for a little self-realization, simplicity, and clarity. Allow me to explain...

Last month, I had the honor of interviewing my colleague Betsy Jordyn. Betsy and I met at Million Dollar Consulting College last year and have become good friends. Betsy is an expert in igniting talent within individuals. Our conversation on the difference between "talent" and "skill" was fascinating for me. After our call, I consulted with her and many of my clients to see what my real "talents" were and what I had a passion for. The exercise really opened my eyes.

My clients basically told me that the reason they do business with me is because of the trusting relationship I've built with them. My ability to communicate and counsel enhanced that relationship to one of a very trusted adviser and partner. From that, I realized that leadership has always been a passion, whether in business, non-profit work, or athletics. Finally, I realized my talent for coaching and mentoring and my deep desire to help leaders enhance their skills and reach their goals.

Bottom line - it's time to clarify my work. I've created a strategy model based on leveraging the power of relationships that I will begin sharing with my community - namely you! In my experience, relationships play a critical part of both your professional and personal life. I believe there are 4 key pillars to any successful leader - Communications, Revenue Generation, Risk Management, and Life Balance. The first two deal with your "offense" and the last two with your "defense" or "Protecting Your House." You will be hearing much more on all of this in future newsletters.

The change in the newsletter format is that you will be seeing brief articles and anecdotes aimed at helping you to enhance your relationship-building skills. That might mean strategy, leadership, public speaking, writing, sales, risk management, or family relationships. For you to become a successful leader (and you are a leader somewhere in your life) you must become a strong and genuine relationship-builder. I hope to hep you get there! You can expect to see this newsletter drop into your Inbox on the last weekday morning of every month. I hope you enjoy!

Life Balance Techniques

hanging aroundLast Saturday, I had the pleasure of speaking to a fine group of insurance professionals for the state conference of the Greater Seattle Insurance Professionals. Our topic was life balance techniques. It was very well received and so I'd like to share with you five of the techniques we discussed.

1 - Don't overbook yourself. This causes tremendous stress and can blow up your time. We too often try to squeeze too much in our days. Stop!

2 - Leverage the use of technology; don't become a slave to it. This will reduce your travel time by using platforms like Go to Meeting and Skype.

3 - Put your cell phone on "silent." Return calls when it's convenient for you. Don't interrupt a meeting or a project to answer a phone. Unless your a doctor, you're not on call.

4 - Don't spend an inordinate amount of time on social media. I can get by in less than 30 minutes a day. By linking blogs and other platforms together, you can expidie your time online.

5 - Reward yourself. You are undoubtedly accomplishing something special every day. Take a few minutes and reward yourself with a mocha, a walk with the dogs, or relaxing quietly. It's highly therapeutic and will help you with positive momentum.

These were only 5 of 21 I handed out. If you'd like to get the entire list, e-mail me at [email protected].
The World According to Captain Jack

Captain JackHello. My name is Captain Jack and I'm the terribly charming, witty, and intelligent pal of my human, Dan. I've been observing human behavior and have come to the conclusion that you all can learn a lot from dogs. Especially me. You see, I'm a Jack Russell and we are unquestionably the smartest dogs on the planet. Let me prove it to you with my very first column...

I read a lot. In fact, you can see me reading the newspaper in this picture. Yes, I know it's the funny papers, but I'm a humorous guy. I find it hard to believe that most human adults don't read very much after high school and college. Being well read leads to a lot of good things. You are able to expand your knowledge; you become a much more engaging conversationalist, and ultimately you become an object of interest both personally and professionally. Take it from me, I'm the doge of my neighborhood (yes, doge not dog).

Dan and I just started reading "Flyboys" by James Bradley. It's a World War II true story about aviators. I love history and imagine I would have made a terrific "ace." Sort of like Snoopy and the Red Baron...

You can help your career and your personal growth tremendously by reading. Read fiction, read history, read self-help, read business...I don't care. Just read. It will give you a bewitching personality. Just see what it did for me!
