This week's focus point - Commitment to Excellence.
Last Friday, Seattle Seahawks All-Pro Left Tackle Walter Jones retired. He played in 12 seasons for Seattle, becoming the measuring stick for all offensive linemen. In 12 full seasons (192 games), he allowed only 23 sacks and called for only 9 holding penalties. Coach Mike Holmgren called him the best offensive player he ever coached, and that group includes Hall of Famers Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, Steve Young, and future Hall of Famer Brett Favre.
Jones was well known for his commitment to excellence. In off-seasons, he conditioned by pulling Cadillac Escalades down the streets of his hometown in Alabama. Although the business of football often kept him out of training camp, he was always ready to go when he arrived. His dedication to his craft was the reason he became arguably the best offensive lineman in the history of the game.
How committed are we to our craft? Do we make the tough sacrifices in improving our "game?" Professional development, practice, coaching, and accountability all are key factors to excellence whether you're the left tackle of an NFL team or a business professional, entrepreneur, or executive. The same is true for every non-profit board member, friend, or parent. Like Walter Jones, if we want to reach the pinnacle of our craft, we've got to be ready to push a few Cadillac Escalades down the street!
