This week's focus point - Leadership.
Just this past week, the president of Frontier Bank in Everett, WA was fired by the CEO because he took a vacation. Well, the issue was that the bank is in critical condition and has to right itself by April 15th or be sold. The CEO was angered that the president (and son of the founder of the bank) left for a pre-planned family vacation to Hawaii. The president said he was accessible by phone, e-mail, Internet, and was willing to fly back to meet with potential investors.
This begs the question - did it show lack of leadership to leave for vacation with the family three weeks before this deadline? Conventional wisdom says yes. Morale, perception, and all that "stuff." I offer this for you to chew on, though. If he was truly accessible and was willing to be made available 24/7, did he really need to be sitting behind his desk? I don't really think the employees care if he was there. I believe the CEO is more angered by insubordination rather than the vacation. My guess is there was more fire there from before.
Leadership isn't about just showing up to work. Leadership is about being accessible and ready to make decisions for the good of the organization or team. It's about strength and courage. There are terrific leaders of organizations who work from their home or remote location. I don't know if the president of the bank was a good leader or not. This may have been the straw that broke the camel's back. What I am saying is that the definition of leadership and the ability to lead is constantly evolving as our ability to communicate does.
This week's quote - "Courage is the first of human qualities because it is the quality which guarantees all the others." Sir Winston Churchill
