This week's focus point - I just finished watching my Alma Mater, the University of Washington, upset the regular season champs, California. As a former high school basketball coach, I feel strongly about the reason for the big win. Both teams had similar statistics except for one key area - points off the bench. Cal is like most teams and have a rotation of about 8 players. Washington has a very deep bench, and coach Lorenzo Romar plays 11 players regularly. What that means is he doesn't have to be as concerned about individual fouls, fatigue, or who's got the "hot" hand. Bench strength won the tournament and the game for the Huskies.
How good is your bench strength? If you are part of a company or organization, then the depth and breadth of your team is critical for your day-to-day and long-term success. If your team is weak, it won't be long until you find that others have to pick up for the weak links. But, if your team is deep, then your team will be more efficient, proficient, and successful.
If you're a solo practitioner or entrepreneur, then your team includes your family, your professionals (attorney, accountant, web designer, etc.), and your community. Just like your larger counterparts, the strength of your team is paramount to your success.
Take a cue from the Dawgs...have a strong bench!
This week's quote - "The strength of the wolf is in the pack, and the strength of the pack is in the wolf." Rudyard Kipling
