Welcome!  Thank you for subscribing to my monthly newsletter.  My goal is to turn you into the best communicator you can be.

In this issue, my monthly rant in The Soap Box focuses on how you communicate in business.  Communicating via cell phone and text changes how you are perceived and understood.  Find how what you can do to improve that.

You will also find featured blog posts from the last month.

Please check out my new "Upcoming Events" schedule to your left to see what professional development opportunities you have.

An important reminder since there are several new subscribers this month - I've had several subscribers accidentally "unsubscribed" because they forwarded my newsletter or e-mail.  I would LOVE for you to forward this newsletter, BUT make sure you do it from the link within this memo.  Why?  Because if you hit "Reply" from your e-mail account, your e-mail address is still the link to my service and if the recipient hits "unsubscribe", it's your e-mail that's affected!  Please make sure you forward my e-mail early and often; by making sure it goes through the link provided in this text.  Thank you!

I hope you enjoy.

"Can You Hear Me Now?"

A few of the more important aspects in good business communications is being brief, clear, and valuable.  In today's technological world, we are accessible almost 24 hours a day with cellular phones and text messaging.  How well do you use these tools?

If you are like me, you use your cell phone for the majority of your business communications.  Take a peek at a few strategies I've developed to meet those aforementioned goals for you...
  • I only accept incoming cell calls if I am in a position to talk.  If you can't give your complete attention at the time the call comes in, let it go to voice mail, find out what is needed, and respond when you are free to give the time.
  • Use text messaging for information, not relationship building.  I love text messaging for information purposes.  For instance, if you need to change a meeting time, advise your location, or make a quick comment, texting is perfect.  If you don't know how to send or receive it, you need to learn.  Texting is becoming an important communication tool.  Don't be like many teenagers (including mine); this is not to build relationships!  Text messaging is for information only.
  • Always ask if this is a good time to talk.  Many times, people answer their phones automatically even if they are busy.  Good etiquette is asking if your recipient has the time to give you their undivided attention.  They will appreciate it.
  • Finally, always bring value to your conversations.  Whether you are solving a problem, answering a question, or scheduling a meeting, make sure you are improving your recipients condition and respecting their time.

I would be remiss in not reminding you that in the State of Washington, not using a hands-free cell phone is illegal.  I urge you to not talk while driving for safety.  That being said, if you MUST, buy a hands-free device.

Always remember, technology is a great thing but can be abused.  Use yours wisely and be courteous to your clients.

Saying Thank You with a card

Do you enjoy receiving thank-you cards?  I mean real thank-you cards that come by snail mail, not e-mail!  One way to really solidify relationships is to send out thank-you cards.  People appreciate the time and effort you take to thank them for their valuable time.  I've had several experiences over the years in which sending thank-you cards has actually brought in business.  In a world where we are always on the go, it's a nice touch to send an old-fashioned thank-you.  You can never go wrong.

I've found a cool new way to send thank-you cards.  If you're like me, time is the biggest issue.  I've discovered a company called Send Out Cards.  If you can e-mail, you can send these cards.  To learn more, click on the link or contact me at 360-271-1592 to set up a free gift account.

You can improve your business relationships by communicating your appreciation through thank-you cards.  Your clients and prospects will love it.
