Can You Hear Me Now?
Starting July 1, you can expect a ticket from the State Patrol in Washington if you are caught talking on a cellular phone without a hands-free device. You have heard me extol the virtues of not using your cell phone while driving because of the distraction it causes. Now, the State of Washington will officially crack down on those of you holding your phone up to your ear.
If you are an employer that has drivers operating your vehicles on the roadways, you need to take notice. I know there is a ton of business conducted daily on cell phones while people drive. The consequences of that are increased accidents due to distracted driving. You are ultimately responsible for your employees and how they operate your vehicle. My recommendation is that you don't allow it at all. Make it a safety procedure that all drivers must sign off on. The welfare of your employees, other drivers, and your auto liability premium is at stake.
Now, you may insist that your sales people HAVE to use cell phones to be efficient. Then at the very least, outfit them with a hands-free device. These are relatively inexpensive and a much better (and legal) option to driving with one hand to your ear and the other on the steering wheel.
Don't take a risk in your reputation, overhead expenses, or insurability. Consider these two options for your business fleet.
One final note...
Make sure YOU practice what you preach. Could there be anything worse than your employee spotting you on your cell phone? Leadership means making sacrifices and commitments, too. It means being a model for the type of behavior you expect. Be a leader for your team.
Can you hear me now?
