Mary's View from the Skylight

Hello folks! You might notice that we are pretty light on the author events this month -- that's because we mostly take August "off" from events in order to regroup and prepare for the busy fall season.

But it's a great opportunity to take a moment to talk about all the other ways you can enjoy our store in August!

Our Coyotes Book Club is reading Stoner by John Williams.  Come to the meeting on August 23 at 8 p.m. for a lively chat about the book The New York Times Book Review called "a perfect novel."

Also check out Pardon My Youth, our young adult book club led by YA author Cecil Castellucci, who will be discussing City of Beasts, Isabelle Allende's first young adult novel.  PMY meets next on September 18 at 2 p.m., but there's no reason you can't start reading now!

Spend $40 and enter to win a very-limited-edition fine art print!  See below for details, and in the case that you need help selecting $40 worth of books, ask anyone on staff and we'll fix you up with a stack of possibilities.

Got some gift buying to do?  Not only will our staff help you find the right book, but we'll also wrap it for free!  Get your greeting cards and gift cards here, too. And if you're the recipient, we sell boxed thank you cards as well.

And hey, it's summer.  We've got air conditioning, a tree, a bench, a cat, and good music on the stereo.  Come and hang out!  Just don't be surprised if you walk out of here with a book.  They are pretty tempting.

Also, stay tuned for some big news coming later this month -- we've got a major new program we're going to be rolling out, and we're pretty excited about it!

Fine Prints #4:

GABRIELLE BELL

Our art-print raffle series continues!

For our fourth installment of our fabulous Fine Prints program we are pleased to present the fabulous Gabrielle Bell. Her work has been featured in the 2007 and 2009 Best American Comics Anthology, as well as the Yale Anthology of Graphic Fiction. Her work has also appeared in Kramer's Ergot, Mome and the Drawn and Quarterly Showcase. Her semi-autobiographical work will take you on a trip that is full of whimsy and wonder. Behold our latest print! The rules are the same as always: for every $40 purchase made either in-store or on-line customers are then eligible to receive a raffle ticket. At the end of the month we will raffle off 9 of these one-of-a-kind original prints. Each print is signed and numbered by Gabrielle herself. You can check out more of her work at her fabulous blog: http://gabriellebell.com.

Upcoming Events at Skylight Books

Anthology:

RADICAL FAERIES

Saturday, August 13th at 5:00 p.m.

The Fire in Moonlight: Stories from the Radical Faeries (White Crane)

fire in moonlight cover

Mark Thompson, editor of this new anthology about the Radical Faeries, will be joined by select contributors in a reading celebrating the book's publication.

This collection gives witness to a groundbreaking movement that painstakingly emerged from the Gay Liberation era. Rooted in the history of radical visionaries, this little known, essential community informs the modern world with new meaning, offering fresh definitions of faith, identity, purpose and gender.

Fire in the Moonlight is a series of personal reflections on who the Radical Faeries are, where they've been and where they are going: Radical Faeries in their own words. It is about how a movement has changed lives--and how Radical Faeries contribute to healing a fractured Earth.

Graphic Novel:

MATT HEWITT

Saturday, August 27th at 10:00 p.m.

Corky Burger

corky burger cover frontCelebrate the release of local artist Matt Hewitt's raunchy graphic novel, Corky Burger!  And yup, you read the time right.  Skylight is staying open late for the event (for those of you who remember the Hot Summer Nights of 2009 and 2010, this is kinda like that).

Disgusting cretin Corky Burger and his grotesque buddy Emporio embark on a bizarre adventure rife with bloodshed, excitement and bodily fluids! Meth cooking maniacs, a raging rent-a-cop, a belligerent bloodthirsty boss and more are all out to cramp Corky's style.

There will be live music from Barfth, film screenings, and maybe even snacks!

Comic Con Diary Part 1

[...]

7 am - noon - Frantically trying to make last minute preparations as we try to leave our house while making sure that we've brought every single baby/toddler item that we think we'll need during our trip.
Noon - Finally on the freeway! San Diego here we come!
12:19 - Cursing traffic on freeway. Have driven a total of four miles.
12:30 - Kids have both fallen asleep. Wife and I are gleefully making small talk. Decide to take slight detour to avoid more traffic.

2:00 - Stop for gas, kids wake up. Begining to resent the drive.

2:18 - Beginning to resent the kids.
3:00 - Almost there. Baby begins to cry.
3:34 - For God's sake, where is the hotel?! Baby is still crying!

3:40 - Finally arrive at hotel. All nerds welcomed!

The post continues on our blog!  See the rest here, check on our blog regularly here, our Tumblr here, and join the discussion on Twitter by following  skylightbooks. We're also on the Facebook as Skylight Books.
