Steven's View from the Skylight
|
Let's talk about the weather and coming together.
May in Los Angeles...the weather is heating up, the sun is setting later...this is the time of the year when I come home from work, pour some iced tea or a cocktail, grab a book, open up a lawn chair, and have a California come down until its too dark to read and the bugs start buzzing. Sometimes I feel like living in Southern California is like I won a lottery...we are some lucky folks. There are people that like to curl up under blankets with their books all winter long but I read much more during our long So Cal summers. I barely got through one book during all of January and February but magically, since Springing Forward, I have been on a literary binge which has included one of my new favorite books: I am finally reading A Visit From the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan. I love it when a book that makes me happy wins something, oh, like a Pulitzer Prize, it feels like I am having a collective moment with culture. Or at least a few other people...right? Anybody? I also read the new Patrick deWitt novel, The Sisters Brothers, which I am hoping we can all connect on as well. We can even do it in person as (I am excited to tell you) he will be here on May 12!
Coming Together (in the heat!) For Books is what was going on last weekend during our annual trip to the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books. The crowds came, books were signed, friends stopped by...the Skylight Books booth was positively vibrating. It is a thrill to see that many people celebrate storytelling, the written word, and the art of the book and it is exhilarating to share in that celebration.
And it doesn't stop! This year's Silverlake Jubilee has an impressive line up on the literary stage sponsored by PEN Center USA; the Los Angeles Review of Books has premiered online; and some of Skylight Books warm May evening events include Geoff Dyer, Bret Easton Ellis, and an evening at the Bootleg Theater with Steve Earle.
Time to break out the floppy hat, fill up the ice cube trays, stock up on lip balm, and say hello to some California come down.

SKYLIGHT BOOKS
BLOG
"Comments and insight from people who spend a lot of time underneath a tree surrounded by books."
| | We're taking part in a pretty cool serialized blog set up by author Catherynne M. Valente (check out info on her event above!) and the nice folks at her publisher, First Second. It's a nine-part short story, with each part being posted by a different bookstore or library that Catherynne will be visiting on her tour! Check it out:
Wednesday, May 4, 2011 "On Fairy Magic" by Catherynne M. Valente 4. On Fairy Magic In Fairyland, magic is easy to come by. Magic is not quite so plentiful as water, but not so scarce as diamonds, either. Perhaps we should say it is like cheese-you might have to go quite a bit down to road to get the best stuff, but just about every corner grocer has a whole shelf full of workaday cheddar and spells. Thus it is important to learn the value of magic early on. Not because it harms one to do magic! That would be a poor sort of magic indeed. But because magic, in addition to being like cheese, is like a handsome youth or maiden that every soul fancies. Magic prefers it when you have had to take that long walk down the road, when you have done hard work and suffered a little for its sake.
