The Raffle

During the month of October, every time  customers make a purchase of $40 or more, they are eligible to receive a raffle ticket which qualifies them to win one of the 10 coveted and unique prints.   (For online customers at www.skylightbooks.com to be entered in the raffle, they should enter "Tomine Raffle" in the comments field of any order of $40 or more.)

The raffle will be held at the store on Saturday, October 30, 2010 at 5:00 p.m., as part of Skylight Books' 14th Anniversary weekend.  Once these prints are gone they will not be reproduced, nor be available for sale. This will be the only opportunity for the public to win one of these prints, which was originally published in the June 9 & 10, 2008 issue of The New Yorker.

Skylight Books General Manager and Co-Owner Kerry Slattery says this project is the brainchild of longtime staff bookseller Kevin Awakuni, who was thinking about positive ways to offer something special to loyal customers, and at the same time serve as a creative  incentive to increase the store's average sale.     He contacted a few of his favorite artists and graphic novelists whose book events have been featured at the store.   Other artists' prints will be featured in 2011.    Awakuni says that Tomine gave invaluable assistance in making this unique program come to fruition, and declares, "Adrian Tomine is awesome and we recommend that all people throughout the world read his books!"

The Artist

Adrian Tomine is one of the more well-known and critically acclaimed graphic novelists of our time. His work has been featured in The New Yorker, Esquire, Rolling Stone, and Time, among other magazines. He might be best known for his comic book series Optic Nerve and is also the author of the books Summer Blonde, Sleepwalk and Other Stories, and most recently Shortcomings.

About Skylight Books

Skylight Books is a 14-year old independent bookstore with a tree in the middle of the store and a resident cat, Franny, and is located in a trendy urban neighborhood in Los Feliz-between Hollywood and downtown.  As a general bookstore, we are often particularly thought of for offbeat literary fiction, graphic novels, books on L.A. history and culture, art, design and film books, as well as an eclectic selection in many other categories.

Our street is one of the few "walking streets" still in L.A., with an independent movie theater on one side and a small stage theater on the other side, and a number of interesting restaurants, cafes, and offbeat shops close by.  Our author events are quite famous-many people think we have the warmest and one of the best bookstore reading spaces in town.
