October Events at Skylight Books
Kerry's View from the Skylight

We're almost 14!
It's hard to believe that at the end of this month (or, more technically, Novermber 1), we'll be 14 years old!!  We always celebrate our anniversary in a big way - as a way of thanking you all for your support and good spirit through these years.  So, on Saturday & Sunday, Oct 30 and 31, we'll have refreshments and special discounts all weekend, as well as a Saturday noontime event with noted filmmaker Judd Apatow.  Don't miss that weekend.

The debut of our "Fine Prints" - this time with Adrian Tomine
We're constantly trying to think of creative ways to do something nice for our customers and at the same time, boost our sales a little, and we think we've come up with a doozy!

During the month of October (Saturday, Oct. 2 until 5 p.m. on Oct. 30), 10 lucky customers will receive a limited edition, signed and numbered 11" x 17" 'giclee' print made exclusively for Skylight Books of artwork donated by internationally famous artist and graphic designer Adrian Tomine. During those dates, all customers who make a purchase of $40 or more are eligible to receive a raffle ticket, which qualifies them to win one of the 10 coveted and unique prints.  We'll hold the raffle on Saturday, Oct. 30 at 5 p.m. -- during our anniversary celebration!  More details about the prints and the raffle will be on our website and at the store.  (Online orders of $40 or more also qualify, but you must write "Tomine raffle" in the comment field at checkout.)  Happy shopping, and good luck!

Several Skylight staffers shared their obsessive love

Nobody Bookforums the Biz... Until now!

Pardon that cornball lead in, but this might be the sweetest thing I've seen in a while: Biz Markie on the cover of Bookforum. The image is taken from the forthcoming book True Hip Hop, by Mike Schreiber, out next month from Mark Batty Publisher. You can pre-order it from us right here.

Bookforum is always a great read, but with a cover story ("Rapper's Delight: the Poetic Possibilities of Hip-Hop") by Kevin Young, an examination of Lady GaGa, "In the Context of No Context" (sample sentence: "She dresses and moves like an alien whore from a Bob Fosse film.") by Heather Havrilesky and a review of Sara Marcus's Girls to the Front: The True Story of the Riot Grrrl Revolution, and Tao Lin's Richard Yates, two books we just happen to be having events for, this is a can't miss issue.

Read the rest of this post to hear more, check on our blog regularly here, and join the discussion on Twitter by following skylightbooks!  We're on Facebook as skylightbooks, too.
BOOK GROUPS:
BACK TO SCHOOL

Despite the fact that summer in L.A. seems never-ending, school is back in session. This month's book group picks are taken from our "back to school (for big kids)" endcap, full or grown-up reads about youthful delinquency.

The Rules of Attraction by Bret Easton Ellis
Upper-middle-class students in a liberal arts college in New England behaving very badly. "Ellis is, first and last, a moralist. Under cover of his laconic voice, every word in his [novels] springs from grieving outrage at our spiritual condition." --Los Angeles Times Book Review

Special Topics in Calamity Physics by Marisha Pessl
The story of a brainy, educated-beyond-her-years prep school student and the clique she joins at an elite school. Plus mysterious deaths and old secrets! "A whirling, glittering, multifaceted marvel." --Janet Maslin, The New York Times

The Chocolate War by Robert Cormier
A modern young-adult classic, and an equally good read for adults. A student refuses to sell chocolates in the school fundraiser and is subjected to the cruelty and corruption of his peers and teachers. This book was a New York Times Outstanding Book of the Year, an ALA Best Book for Young Adults, and a School Library Journal Best Book of the Year.

If you have a book group but you're not registered with the store, remember that book groups that do register get 15% off their pick each month. E-mail Emily at [email protected] now to find out how to register your book group! You can check out our registered book groups here.
