 Kerry's View from the Skylight

Dear Skylight Supporters,

August is traditionally our month to take a break from events so we can  re-group, re-assess, re-organize, and plan some creative projects and exciting fall book orders...

BUT... that doesn't mean there's no activity here this month -- we just HAD to have a big celebration for what would have been Charles Bukowski's 90th Birthday (Saturday, August 14 -- see the article below), as well as a continuation of our lively "Hot Summer Saturdays" -- meaning we're open till midnight every Saturday in August -- join us for  music, games, refreshments, or just stop in to browse.  The Bukowski party is a collaboration with the Goethe-Institute Los Angeles -- did you know Bukowski was born in Germany, and that he has a huge following in Europe?

Don't miss our sale for on-line orders Aug 6 - 13
 (see article below for details)

Skylight Staffers -- new and old...
In the last few months, we've welcomed some terrific new staff members --all greatly experienced booksellers, and said goodbye to a few.

Hannis Brown
has moved to NYC, to continue his work as an emerging - but increasingly hot - young composer.  Our jill-of-all-tasks Katrina Thek and poetry guy Jade Shames are also moving to the Big Apple.

But we're fortunate to welcome the return of several former staffers -- Brandon Spradling (who's returned from 4 years  in Portland) has just designed snazzy new bookmarksbookmark - new for us as well as a brand new gift cardgift card blue cat;

and Dario Castanheirareturning after an absence of a year and a half, knows a lot about photography and architecture from his Sci-Arc training and his own photography work.  Former staffer Amy Skorheim is also dropping in after 4 years away to do an occasional event hosting for us.

...and new to us, but not to bookselling... are Jenn Witte, direct from Green Apple Books in San Francisco (she's the 'chalker' behind the fabulous blackboard drawings on our sidewalk A-frame sign) and T.C. Strickland, who joins us after many years at our esteemed L.A.bookselling colleague, EsoWon Bookstore.  You'll soon see portrait drawings of them on our website and in the store (done for us by artist Rama Hughes).

So drop in and say hello.

HOT SUMMER SATURDAYS
Saturday nights in August!

Back by popular demand!  Skylight's Hot Summer Nights, in which we stay open until midnight on Saturdays during the summer, is back and better than ever. Come by the store to enjoy snacks, music (occasionally live), games, and good summer times. The party gets jumping around 9 p.m. and goes until midnight!

Here's what we have planned! (Schedule subject to change.):

Saturday, August 7:  Skylight Summer Olympics (Infinite Jest Badminton redux, thumb wrestling tournament, rubber band target shooting, scavenger hunt, speed alphabetizing, and/or galley stacking)

Saturday, August 14:  90th Birthday Tribute to Charles Bukowski (see above for more info)

Saturday, August 21: Performance/filming of the brand-new rock opera (Rabbitar 3D) by Skylight's in-house band Staff Juice. This is an interactive filming, so bring by your camera (no matter how good an image it produces) and help us record the occasion!

Saturday, August 28: A live performance by electronic/industrial trio Nitzer Ebb!

News from Skylight Staffers!

Fragile GangLots of you have seen our TV commercial by now, and many have commented on the catchy song that's playing in the background.  That song was by the band Fragile Gang, featuring Skylight's very own Arlo Klahr, and if you liked it, we have good news for you! Fragile Gang has a new CD out, which you can buy not only in the store, but also on Skylight's website, right here.  It's $9.99, and worth every one of those 999 pennies.

lfvbid holiday festivalStaffer Monica Carter has had a very exciting year, becoming a 2010 PEN USA Emerging Voices Fellow and being published in Black Clock 12. Now the Lambda Literary Foundation has named her a 2010 Emerging LGBT Voices Fellow, which includes a one-week writers' retreat in August.  Congratulations, Monica!

BRAND-NEW RECOMMENDATIONS!
Find us at www.skylightbooks.blogspot.com

More Skylight staffers caught the blogging bug in July, with newbies Kate and Dario joining blog regulars Kevin and Steve in posting tidbits, reviews, book news, and book-into-movie updates.

Alex Prager photo
Dario takes the prize for most-frequent contributor, with four posts in July.  He brings several new art/photography/design books to our attention, with posts on Emil Kozak, Olaf Hajek, Alex Prager, and Penguin book cover designer David Pearson. Steve discusses two of the perks of being a bookseller: getting recommendations from customers and going to red-carpet movie premieres.  Kevin reviews the new Jonathan Franzen book (out August 31 -- preorder here!) and loves it, and he enumerates the joys of Chuck Klosterman's Hypertheticals (which are beloved by many Skylight staffers).

So while recommendations abound on our blog, we're going to excerpt Kate's thoughtful and tentative take on the film industry's new fondness for Richard Brautigan:

Good (?) News for Richard Brautigan Fans

KateThere are several exciting Brautigan-related film projects in the works.  First up is a documentary on his life, with quite a few familiar names attached, including Jeff Bridges, Peter Coyote and, of course, that dude who legally changed his name to Trout Fishing in America.  There are also three feature films currently in the planning stages: The Abortion, The Hawkline Monster (the only Brautigan book I can actually envision as a successful film) and A Confederate General from Big Sur, which Benicio Del Toro appears to be trying to direct.

Read the rest of this post to hear more, check on our blog regularly here, and join the discussion on Twitter by following skylightbooks!  We're on Facebook as skylightbooks, too.
BOOK GROUPS:
THE LONG SUMMER

With the turn of the calendar from July to August, it's safe to say that we're entering the "dog days" of summer.  With that in mind, consider pouring yourself a tall iced tea and recommending one of these novels to your book group; they all take place over a long, hot summer.

Sag HarborSag Harbor by Colson Whitehead
Described as "a kind of black Brighton Beach Memoirs" (The Washington Post), this new-in-paperback novel is set during the summer of '85 in the Hamptons, where one teenage boy endures a lopsided haircut, New Coke, and other disasters.

Dandelion WineDandelion Wine by Ray Bradbury
Based on the author's memories of growing up in Waukegan, IL, this novel isn't Bradbury's usual sci-fi/fantasy, but its nostalgia feels magical, nonetheless.  Set in 1928 and filled with the pleasures and sorrows of a childhood in a sleepy town, this is often assigned in schools but definitely worth revisiting.

Little ChildrenLittle Children by Tom Perrotta

You might have seen the excellent movie based on this book, but it's definitely worth reading anyway, and not just because the ending is different. Perrotta is a master at crafting smart books that can't be put down, and his characters' foibles are both funny and poignant. A must read!

If you have a book group but you're not registered with the store, remember that book groups that do register get 15% off their pick each month. E-mail Emily at emily@skylightbooks.com now to find out how to register your book group! You can check out our registered book groups here.
