Kerry's View from the Skylight | |
"Independents Week" the first week of July
We're encouraging our friends to seek out and make a purchase or two at a locally-owned independent store this month -- especially for a few of those items which might have otherwise been purchased at an online mega-store or big box store.
While our neighborhood has many indie choices for art galleries, bakeries, boutiques, clothing, jewelry, restaurants of every kind, hair salons, health & exercise centers and more, don't forget about indie coffee shops, hardware stores, butcher shops, grocers, video stores, movie theatres, nurseries, drugstores etc. (Good ones do still exist.)
To help out, we've created a 'starter' indie suggestion list you can pick up at the store. Keep your money circulating in your community three times as long or more than at chains or non-local businesses. Every dollar spent at a local independent business helps your community in a myriad of ways. Even two purchases that would have otherwise been made at a big box or online 'biggie' can make a huge difference, if we all do it!
... and to help you make that extra purchase or two at this indie store, on July 1 - 4, you can get 20% off your books if you purchase 2 or more!! (...and a discount coupon for our online store)
Hot Summer Saturdays (till midnight)!
Some of our customers have been requesting a return of last summer's "Hot Summer Nights", so we've decided to do it again this summer - reborn as "Hot Summer Saturdays!" -- we'll stay open till midnight for 7 Saturdays (July 17 - August 28) and present a little music and other themed evenings. Join us for libations, or just come and browse till midnight. More info to come.
Los Feliz Village Street Festival Sat July 31
Be sure to visit our neighborhood for this year's incarnation of the Los Feliz Village street fair -- sponsored by the LF Village BID. While we won't be closing off the street this year, it should be a fun and lively day from 2-9pm, when many local businesses will be putting out tables, having special events or sales, there will be some streetcorner activities, and a tram to take you around Hillhurst, Vermont and Hollywood Blvd. More info to come.
Our "emerging voice" Monica at the Hammer July 21 at 7
Monica Carter of our store's staff was this year chosen for one of six coveted fellowship positions in PEN USA West's "Emerging Voices" program - an intensive eight-month mentorship program for writers in the early stages of their literary careers (in Monica's case, to further hone her novel set in Manhattan during the 1930s). The program culminates in a reading at the Hammer Museum -- see details in the left column if you'd like to support Monica's reading.
Reminder: on the 4th of July, we're closing at 5pm.
It's cool here -- so drop in and join us this summer.

Skylight's Blog: CELEBRITIES REAL AND IMAGINED | | Find us at www.skylightbooks.blogspot.com
We're lucky enough to host events with many of our favorite authors, but sometimes, for one reason or another, we don't get to have a full-fledged event with someone whose books we devour. Enter the "stock signing," which is when an author who won't be doing an event in our store comes by anyway to sign some books and say hello. John Waters, whose new book Role Models came out in May, dropped by to sign stock and do a short video interview with our frequent event host Noel Alumit. it's on our blog -- check it out! And we still have signed copies in the store, so come by soon and pick one up.
While we're on the subject of celebrities, check out the below, from staffer Emily:
Tuesday, June 1, 2010 For All Those Celebs Who Wish to Remain Anonymous...
...why not walk around like this all the time?
Hannis, a coworker who's leaving us for NYC, recommends this book on his
way out the door. Come to the store and check out his shelf talker. And
former coworker Edan makes a rather convincing smoker, eh? Or not. It's
hard to hold a book like you hold a cigarette!
Read the rest of this post to find out more about Emily's Corpus Libris project, check on our blog regularly here, and join the discussion on Twitter by following skylightbooks! We're on Facebook as skylightbooks, too. |
BOOK GROUPS: ESPIONAGE!
| |
In honor of the novel-esque alleged Russian spy ring that's been in the news lately, here are a few spy thrillers for you to share with your book group. Page-turners and paranoia for all!
Spies of the Balkans by Alan FurstThe brand-new book by the master of the espionage novel, set in Greece in the early days of World War II. "This new novel is wonderfully realized - intelligent, entertaining and ultimately thought-provoking." -- Los Angeles Times
A Most Wanted Man by John le Carre
Speaking of Alan Furst, here's what he had to say about the latest from the author of The Constant Gardener; Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy; and The Spy Who Came in from the Cold: "Le Carre's strongest, most powerful novel... Extraordinary" (from his cover review in the New York Times Book Review)
The Plot Against America by Philip RothAn alternate history in which isolationist Charles Lindbergh is elected president in 1940 and works out an "understanding" with Adolf Hitler. Less espionage and more politics, but this is a major work from a heavyweight American novelist. "Roth's most powerful novel to date." -- San Francisco ChronicleIf you have a book group but you're not registered with the store, remember that book groups that do register get 15% off their pick each month. E-mail Emily at emily@skylightbooks.com now to find out how to register your book group! You can check out our registered book groups here. |
