Tuesday, February 9 at 7:30 p.m.
A Common Pornography (HarperCollins)
Kevin Sampsell will be here to discuss and sign his new memoir.
"This is a
heartbreaking and magnificent book. I love its mosaic structure--a

despair and beauty--I am reminded of Denis Johnson's Jesus' Son. This is the kind of book where you want to
thank the author for helping you feel less alone with being
alive." --Jonathan Ames, author of Wake

Skylight's Blog: BOOK PICKS FROM OUR STAFF
|
|
Find us at www.skylightbooks.blogspot.com
If you've been in our store, well, ever, you'll know that our staff has a lot of opinions on books. We love some so much that a simple shelf talker (those recommendations that hang off the shelf under the book) isn't enough. For our staffer Kevin, even writing a blog post isn't enough. Sometimes, he has to write two. This was the case with The Unnamed (you might have noticed above that the author, Joshua Ferris, will be at our store on Thursday, February 4th). He wrote the first when he finished reading the advance copy back in September, and now that the book is finally out, he had to share his enthusiasm again. Here's an excerpt:
Wednesday, January 6, 2010 The Awesome Book Has Finally Arrived!
The book has arrived and it is blue and beautiful and in a sturdy
hardcover edition. I can't really reiterate how much I liked not just
Ferris' writing style but also the creativity and originality of his
novel. And if pure awesomeness is not enough of an incentive for
you to read this book, then how about the fact that Skylight Books is
the only bookstore in Los Angeles where Joshua Ferris will be appearing.
Read the rest of this post here, check on our blog regularly here, and join the discussion on Twitter by following skylightbooks! We're on Facebook as skylightbooks, too.

BOOK GROUPS: IN MEMORIAM |
|
We lost two great writers last week. Howard Zinn, author of the immensely influential history book A People's History of the United States: 1492-Present, passed away on January 27 of a heart attack. And J. D. Salinger, author of the American classic The Catcher in the Rye, passed away the same day of natural causes. We always hate to get news like this, but it is an opportunity for readers (book clubs and individuals alike) to read or reread some wonderful and important books. Here are our suggestions:
A People's History of the United States by Howard ZinnIf you have to choose one Zinn book to read, this is the one. It's a revolutionary view of American history from the point of view of women, factory workers, African Americans, Native Americans, working poor, and immigrant laborers. Readers who wants the other side of the story will be fascinated. Franny and Zooey by J. D. SalingerNot the most famous of Salinger's novels, but this one has a special place in our heart. When it came time to name our store kitten last year, we settled on Franny, so she'd have an appropriately literary pedigree. This novel was born out of two short stories on the Glass family, in which the title characters are twentysomething siblings. The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen ChboskyIf you're already familiar with the works of these great writers, you can consider this an opportunity to move on to the generation they influenced. Chbosky's coming-of-age novel is a modern tale of a high school loner, which might sound familiar if you've read The Catcher in the Rye. This is a lovely homage and a classic in its own right. If you have a book group but you're not registered with the store, remember that book groups that do register get 15% off their pick each month. E-mail Emily at emily@skylightbooks.com now to find out how to register your book group! You can check out our registered book groups here. |
