Kerry's View from the Skylight

2009 was a challenging year for all of us, and we gratefully appreciate the kerry drawing support of those of you who went out of your way to purchase your holiday gifts from us and let us know that our continued existence is meaningful to your day to day lives.  We love being your bookstore!

Wrapping for a cause was a hit!
Our volunteer holiday giftwrappers this year raised hundreds of dollars which will soon be in the hands of the following organizations (designated by the individual wrappers):

The Jenesse Center (domestic abuse support center), the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Project NATEEN (services for pregnant and parenting teens), Breast Cancer Research Foundation, St. Vincent Meals on Wheels, and Friends of the Los Feliz Library.

This is In addition to the several hundred dollars and many specific books which were donated by wrappers and customers for our book drive project for the Los Feliz Elementary School library, which relies on the neighborhood to help keep it stocked with new books.  We're still collecting books for this project, so contact monica@skylightbooks.com for more info.

New books coming in...
Our shelves are now starting to fill up again with exciting newly published titles, and we're gradually restocking those sold over the holidays.

Events
January is usually a time we take a break from events, but we just HAD to do the ones you see below.

As always, I do appreciate hearing about your experiences here -- things we can improve as well as what you particularly appreciate.  It's the only way we can continue to offer the very best service.  See you soon!

Footnotes in Gaza (Henry Holt & Co.)

Joe SaccoThe acclaimed cartoonist-reporter will discuss his new book of graphic reportage, Footnotes in Gaza, about which the New York Times Book Review raves, "Joe Sacco's gripping, important book about two long-forgotten mass killings of Palestinians in Gaza stands out as one of the few contemporary works on the Israeli-Palestinian struggle likely to outlive the era in which they were written."footnotes in gaza

One of the world's foremost cartoonists, Sacco is widely hailed as the creator of war-reportage comics. He is the author of, among other books, Palestine, which received the American Book Award, and Safe Area Gorazde, which won the Eisner Award and was named a New York Times Notable Book and Time magazine's best comic book of 2000.

WRAPPING UP THE YEAR
Find us at www.skylightbooks.blogspot.com

Roberto BolanoDecember is the time of year when many blogs try to sum things up, and we were no exception.  We posted a wrap-up of our favorite books of 2009 -- a diverse list (in two parts) that we compiled instead of attempting to craft a list of the "best" books of the year.  We shared the good news that we were runner-up in a display contest for the Harvard University Press book A New Literary History of America.  And we announced a contest of our own, in which folks could try to guess our top five fiction titles since the store's 1996 opening. The winner has just been announced, as has our top ten list! Casimiro T. guessed two out of five won a signed hardcover copy of Zeitoun by Dave Eggers and a signed hardcover copy of Well by Matthew McIntosh, as well as a gift card.  Jenny H. was our runner up, the first to correctly guess our #1 fiction title -- Ask the Dust by John Fante -- so she won a copy of Ask the Dust and a gift card.

This month we also partook in a Skylight Books Blog first: a guest blogger! Emily introduces:

Guest Post: What Bolaņo Read: His Top 5, and His Top 5,000

[...] Last year at the ABA Winter Institute in Salt Lake City, I was on a panel with Tom McCartan, then a bookseller at the now-closed Shaman Drum Bookshop in Ann Arbor, MI. He's now an intern at Melville House Publishing.

When he contacted me about hosting some pieces he's written, here was my thought process: "Tom is cool, and a former bookseller. Bolaņo is cool, and The Coyotes Book Club is reading 2666 right now. Melville House is cool -- an indie press with a great blog that I'm all for supporting." And so here we are. Tom's posts are great -- they teach us about Bolaņo, but they also invite us, as readers, to think about why we read what we read. [Click here for] the first installment in full, and also a link to subsequent posts. Enjoy!

Read the rest of this post here, check on our blog regularly here, and join the discussion on Twitter by following skylightbooks!  We're on Facebook as skylightbooks, too.
BOOK GROUPS:
ANTI-RESOLUTIONS

We've got a new endcap display in the store that's filled with "anti-resolution" books; i.e., all the smoking, drinking, drugs, and ill-advised sex you can handle. With that as inspiration, here are some book club reads that are about as far away from those ubiquitous resolution-minded magazine articles as you can get.

Hell's AngelsHell's Angels
by Hunter S. Thompson
A notorious bad boy himself, Thompson spent nearly two years in the company of some truly unsavory characters -- the Hell's Angels motorcycle gang. They nearly killed him in the end, but the book he wrote about them has become a classic.

Adderall DiariesThe Adderall Diaries by Stephen Elliott
Another nonfiction title, this one features drug dependency, sadomasochism, and murder. Jerry Stahl writes about this book, "Phenomenal... Stephen Elliott may well have written the memoir of an entire generation."

Bad BehaviorBad Behavior by Mary Gaitskill
Peopled by prostitutes, drug addicts, and other characters living on the margin, this short story collection was praised by Alice Munro as "startlingly original, with a sort of rhythm and fine moments that flatten you out when you don't expect it."

If you have a book group but you're not registered with the store, remember that book groups that do register get 15% off their pick each month. E-mail Emily at emily@skylightbooks.com now to find out how to register your book group! You can check out our registered book groups here.
