GLEN DAVID GOLD
Sunnyside (Knopf)
I'm so happy that we'll finally be hosting Gold, who we've wanted here since his previous fascinating novel, Carter Beats the Devil. Sunnyside is one of the most exciting books I've read in the last year! You'll want to be in on the ground floor for this terrific new book, which is getting great reviews all over the country. Reminiscent of Doctorow, there's a fascinating cast of characters dealing with the worlds of Charlie Chaplin and the early silent movies in L.A., as well as some of the wild absurdities surrounding World War I. It's a big book but I couldn't put it down ... read it straight through.
-- Kerry Slattery, Skylight Books
"A breathless stupendous novel that recreates both a young brash America on the verge of becoming itself, and Chaplin, one of its most bewitching quixotic citizens." -- Junot Diaz
"Scores of novels have tried and failed to depict movie stars and stardom or genius. Yet here Gold conjures a nuanced character who springs to life. Gold captures the look and feel of pre-1920s Los Angeles, when downtown was still the hub and much of what we now think of as urban sprawl was farmland or citrus groves or empty space with movie studios sprouting up." - - LA Times
"Brilliant . . . Gold's dexterous voice can swing from the exuberant melodrama of silent film to the terror of doomed soldiers to the quiet despair of the world's most beloved man . . . There are so many dazzling episodes-in such a wide variety of settings in so many different styles and tones-that I began to think there was nothing Gold couldn't do . . . Most important, he has figured out how to make Chaplin strut and feint and dance in print . . . Gold captures [Chaplin] in scenes of rich psychological acuity." --Washington Post
Glen David Gold received his MFA for creative writing at the University of California at Irvine and has written for newspapers, film, and television. He lives in Northern California with his wife, author Alice Sebold.
