We don't need to tell you it's big news these days when an independent bookstore EXPANDS! But that's exacty what's happening to 12-year-old Skylight Books in Los Feliz this week. 
On the evening of Wednesday, July 30, we will close early (7pm) to make room for staff and volunteers (including local librarians and enthusiastic customers), who will be moving all the books from the popular arts-related sections -- Art, Design, Architecture, Photography, Music, Film, Theatre, Fashion, Graphic Novels, as well as our entire magazine section -- to a newly renovated 1400 square foot storefront next door! (It's not a contiguous space, so book carts -- some of them borrowed from Vroman's Bookstore, as well as Doug Dutton and the Los Feliz Library -- will be traveling back and forth on the Vermont Avenue sidewalk for hours.)
The move will allow us the opportunity to more effectively organize and expand other sections of the store, including the Children's and Fiction sections, so we can better serve the surrounding book-savvy Los Feliz, Silver Lake, Echo Park, East Hollywood neighborhoods.

"Skylight Books1814" is born
On Thursday, July 31 at 12 noon, the new space (to be dubbed "Skylight Books 1814" -- named for its address on Vermont Ave) will open for business for the first time. It will be a 'soft opening,' as we will continue to put on finishing touches all month, culminating in a gala "Grand Opening" on Saturday, August 30

Bookstore naming contest
Close to 200 names were submitted for a contest to name the new bookstore. Just before the Grand Opening, we will announce our favorite name submissions in a number of different categories (including 'favorite name with Lucy in the title,' 'favorite play on the word 'light'' etc) and the winners will receive Skylight Books gift cards ranging from $10 to $50.
