Kerry's View from the Skylight

Our new space next door is ALMOST ready -- at least for a 'soft', gentle opening.  For those of you who haven't heard, we're expanding the bookstore by moving our books on art, architecture, design, music, film, fashion, theatre and magazines -- to a newly renovated storefront next door at 1814 N. Vermont! kerry drawing We're still doing the final touches on the space and staffing and will open the doors within the next few weeks.  Then we'll have a big, festive GRAND OPENING in August.  I'll send out another newsletter this month to tell you when it's open.

Because of all this, we've booked fewer author events this summer, and it's taken me longer to get out our July newsletter, but there are some upcoming authors that we want to be sure you don't miss -- starting with the inimitable Barbara Ehrenreich on Thursday, July 10.

We need volunteers to help with our move!
When we are ready to move the relevant book sections next door, we don't want to close the store, so it will happen after the store closes at 10pm and could go way into the night, and we need volunteers to help us.   We can offer pizza, good company and your name etched in L.A. literary history (we mean that literally, displayed on a plaque on our new walls).  Contact me if you'd like to join us (date tbd):  [email protected]

We thank you all for your continued support!

This Land is Their LandReports from a Divided Nation
(Henry Holt & Co)
American feminist, socialist and political activist Ehrenreich, is a widely read columnist and essayist, and the author of nearly 20 books, including the ground-breaking Nickel and Dimed:  On (Not) Getting By in America.

Her book of satirical commentary, The Worst Years of Our Lives, about the Reagan era, was received with bestselling acclaim. The one problem was the title: couldn't some prophetic fact-checker have seen that the worst years of our lives were still to come? Here they are, the 2000s, and in This Land Is Their Land, Ehrenreich subjects them to the most biting and incisive satire of her career.

Telex from Cuba (Scribner Book Company)

Kushner's new novel is set in the American community in Cuba during the years leading up to Castro's revolution -- a place that was a paradise for a time and for a few.

"... a prodigious work, sparking into life throughout its pages, beautifully balanced in its views of plantation society and the revolutionary force that ultimately overthrows it, written without bombast or self-referring language, as if the writer is so intent on the people she portrays, she writes them with a kind of rare innocence, the innocence of the true observer who submits to the power of the tale she tells."
