Free Poetry Month Workshop: Appreciating Difficult Poems
|
Sunday, April 6 at 2:00 p.m.
Free Poetry Month Workshop (2-4pm) - led by poet Terry Wolverton. Pre-registration required (323) 661-5954.
The topic is "Appreciating Difficult Poems": Some readers of poetry may get discouraged, intimidated, or even annoyed when they encounter poems that don't seem to communicate their message easily. Indeed, several traditions in modern and contemporary poetry are not about making a clear argument or conveying a sincere emotional experience. These poems have other intentions, and understanding those can help increase appreciation and even enjoyment of them.
Together, we'll read and discuss a few select poems that might be considered "difficult," then play with a writing exercise that might render a "difficult" poem.

Join us to hear about two important new books about Los Angeles history from Angel City Press:
Mt. Wilson was named for him. His grandson was General Patton. But who was this man who shaped Los Angeles and California history in a remarkable number of ways? This successful mountain man was also L.A.'s 2nd Mayor, set up our local government, and was one of the wealthiest men in early LA. Learn about the fascinating history of Benjamin Davis Wilson.
Los Angeles was the subject of the longest, loudest, most persistent promotional campaign in the history of the United States, trying to woo people to leave their homes and help create a 'new' city in what was then a small town. And historian Zimmerman, in Paradise Promoted, has collected photos and ephemera of the early promotional campaign orchestrated by the Chamber of Commerce that lured people west.
