3 Sure-Fire Sales Tips to Increase the Success of Your Cold Calls

I remember a former sales manager of mine going around the room asking each salesperson how many calls each rep made for the day. "I responded and yelled out, "I made 65 calls! He responded, "That's great! Keep up the good work!" At the time, I really thought that the number of calls made always equated to more sales. That thought process is a complete myth and it's absolutely positively not true. It's the quality of the cold call that really counts!
Below are three practical ideas that you can use immediately to improve your cold calls:
1. Know who you're calling before you call them
Sounds funny, no? Of course you would know who you're calling before you call them. The reality of this concept is that most salespeople really don't know who they're calling before they speak with their prospect. As a recommendation, learn everything that you can about your prospect and take a few minutes to review their website. This invested time is called "Taking a Genuine Interest in Your Prospect."
2. Leave a voice mail message and send a personalized letter to your prospect
Being in sales, it's a sure-fire guess that you will probably leave a lot of voice mail messages. And this percentage could be well over 50 percent. This means that if you make 20 cold calls that you will probably get the opportunity to leave 10 or more voice mail messages. Should you leave one? The answer is YES! The odds are in your favor and to increase your odds, I also recommend that you follow up with a personalized sales letter. Have one created so that all you have to do is insert your prospects name. In one week, after they received your letter, follow up with your prospect by telephone and they will know precisely the reason for your call.
3. Become best friends with your contact management software because your best sales will always come from those prospects that you contact more than 5 times
Don't expect to make a sale right away. It's a process from start to finish that could take weeks, months or even years. The key is in your follow-up. Think long-term and don't think how can I get a quick sale? Your sales will come as you build your sales pipeline of well-defined prospects.
