Co-Presidents' Message
As the summer was drawing to a close, I made one last pool trip with my kids.  I met my regular friends and some new acquaintances.  Naturally, conversation turned to the start of the school year (or "vacation" for many parents of school-aged kids!).   "So what do you have planned?" one friend innocently asked.

As co-presidents of the PTA, we planned on utilizing the creative, enthusiastic spirit of our volunteer corps to support our students and teachers.  We planned on asking people to donate their time and their money, two commodities regarded as personal and sometimes off-limits.  Pretty much, we planned on resourcing the terrific folks in our school community to keep the well-oiled machine running.

Vanderlyn's students and teachers are benefitting greatly from the efforts of our volunteers.  If you have volunteered this year, please know that your efforts are greatly appreciated, worthwhile and noticed!

Several individuals have come forward as invaluable to the success of this PTA year.  A big thank you to:  Laura Potts, Marnie Fairris, Gaia Shamis, Sabrina Rahim, Sangeeta Nainwal, Nomiki Klonaris, Paige Ackaway, Melanie Gracey, Suzanne Baisier, Joe Hill, Susan Tallent, Lyn Brown, Katie Troxel, Christine Kelemen, Kate Sweeney, Samidha Bansal, Michelle Moore, Susan Bolte, Ginny Rice, Amy Tharp, Robin Murphy, Louisa Boss, Jill Hodges, Sherrill Pettit, Brenda Ridl, Tina Wilkinson, Mitra Saha, Kim Gavlak, Lucia Urtusastegui, Bill Florence, Jennifer Nail, Kathryn Wilson, Manju Dhiman,  Michele Fincher, Michele Garber, Nicki Harrington, Tracy Brobst, Michele Chambers, Kay Sedberry,  Jennifer Westrick, Erika Harris, Amy Gaynor, Veronica Pinell McNamara, Andrea Feinberg, Bridgette Uhde, Cami Mitelman, Clay Massey, Jennifer Smith, Beth Reaves, Sandi Sherman, Kelly Ballard, and Valerie Romano.  Thank you, room mothers!  And thank you to those that participated in Registration and Grounds days!

Thank you to all those families who have made a commitment to the Annual Fund.  Your support enables the PTA to implement plans quickly, benefiting students and teachers alike.

In closing, while Vanderlyn has a strong volunteer corps, there is always need for greater support.  We encourage all families to participate as time permits.  Your PTA welcomes ALL and is open to ALL!

Have a great week!

Superintendent to Update DCSD Families
DCSD families are invited to attend to hear district updates.  Throughout the month of October, DeKalb County School District (DCSD) Superintendent Dr. Cheryl Atkinson will host a series of roundtable meetings for parents. At these meetings, parents can learn more about the status of current issues faced by the district, as well as hear about new initiatives launching in the 2012-13 school year. DCSD families also will have the opportunity to ask questions.

These are open forums for all DeKalb County parents, and they replace the previous parent advisory committees. Parents are encouraged to submit their questions in advance to lillian_m_govus@fc.dekalb.k12.ga.us.

The meetings will take place from 7 p.m. until 8:30 p.m.

.....and ACTION!

Attention parents of kindergarten, second and third graders:  Vanderlyn REALLY needs volunteers to fill the roles of Kindergarten, Second and Third Grade Production Chairs.  Production chairs are responsible for assisting our Drama, Dance and Music instructors in the production of a fantastic grade-wide show.  In November, the kindergarten class will perform in "Me and My Senses".  The second grade will revisit the beloved performance "The Nutcracker" in January, and the third grade will perform "The Presidents" in April.  As a chair, you will work with our teachers and students, and to a lesser degree, classroom production coordinators.  Contact Randi Siegel for more information.

Please consider being a part of our productions!
Box Tops, Soup Labels and Tyson Labels
Do you have your scissors and plastic bags nearby?  On October 12, 2012 we will be collecting your Box Tops, Campbell and Tyson Labels.  This is a very easy way to earn money for Vanderlyn.  So don't forget to send in your clippings to your child's teacher on October 12!

What's Growing in the Garden?
Recently all fourth grade students were able to harvest and take home sweet potatoes as part of their social studies curriculum. Two weeks ago all fifth grades students planted spinach, radishes and lettuce during their Health class with Coach Dwyer. The fifth grade students will harvest the food mid to late October.

PLEASE NOTE: The Organic Garden Committee has installed special garden soaker hoses throughout the garden beds by the school gym. Last weekend boys were seen riding their bikes over the delicate hoses. Please ask your children to NOT ride through the garden area. Thank you for your help!

Thank You!
The Grounds Committee would like to acknowledge the hardworking volunteers from North Atlanta Church of Christ and the Vanderlyn International Committee for their tremendous help on Saturday, September 29.  Along with parent volunteers, we cut back shrubs, pulled weeds, moved a ton of mulch, pressure washed sidewalks, and had a good time doing so! The International Committee also provided a well-received ice cream treat for our dozens of pint-sized volunteers. We are so grateful and hope everyone appreciates the results of their efforts. If you would like to help in future grounds work days, please contact Bill Florence or Michelle Fincher.
