Principal's Message
Dear Parents,

Curriculum Night was a HUGE success! It was exciting to see such a great turnout of parents. Our teachers really enjoyed sharing all the ways that your child will learn and grow academically this school year. If you were unable to attend Curriculum Night, please contact your child's teacher to schedule an appointment or to request a copy of the information that was shared. It is imperative that we begin the school year on a positive note by keeping the lines of communication open between home and school. If there is a problem, please give the teacher an opportunity to address it. You must have effective communication to find an instantaneous agreement in any situation of conflict. Communication facilitates a middle ground where both parties are willing to study the issue or a long-term solution. It is our goal to establish positive relationships that foster parents as important partners. Remember, we have the same priority as you - your child's best interest.

Together For Children,
Mrs. Crenshaw
Vanderlyn Student Attends National Math Bee
Vanderlyn student, Aaditya Saha, competed at the National Math Bee Level 1 competitions held at the University of Michigan. Aaditya ranked 5th and won a trophy! There were a total of 122 participants competing at his level for the finals from over 34 states. Participation in the finals is by invitation only and is based on regional scores; the regionals took place earlier in the year and approximately 1000 children from all over US had competed at Level 1.  Aaditya, GREAT JOB representing Vanderlyn!
Project Manager Skills Needed
The Vanderlyn PTA is exploring the feasibility of transforming the courtyard into an outdoor classroom, and we need advice from an expert in Construction Project Management.  If you are this person or know one that is willing to assist, please contact Julia LeDoyen.
Picture Day - September 13
Haircuts, clean shirts and smiles are right around the corner!  Picture Day will take place on Thursday, September 13. Both individual and class photos will be taken at this time.  You will have the opportunity to order your child's photo in a few weeks, when the pictures are returned to the school.  Contact Amy Gaynor or Jen Smith with any questions.  SAY CHEESE!
Information Boards - HELP WANTED
Is your inner artist/scrapbooker/designer screaming for self-expression?  Then the Information Board Committee needs your help!  We are in need of a volunteer (or two) to decorate on a regular basis two small bulletin boards in the front hall of the school.  You will be provided topics to use as subject content.  This volunteer position is important, but not terribly time consuming and allows for very flexible scheduling.  Contact Jennifer Westrick to get started on this fun and creative opportunity.
Lunch Bunch Volunteers Needed
If you are looking for a great way to volunteer in the school and really get to know the kids in their element (eating!), then Lunch Bunch is for you!

We are in great need of volunteers to work 45 minute shifts to help the kids during lunch.  This gives our wonderful teachers their much-needed break time during lunch and is part of the reason why Vanderlyn is a great school for teachers...parent commitment!

We can schedule to your preferences either weekly, bimonthly, or monthly.  You can even be on our list as a substitute only.  If you are interested, please contact Michelle Moore or go now and sign up on Sign-up Genius for your preferred schedule.

Carpool Volunteers Needed
In order to make the kids reach their classes at right time, we need 3 to 4 parent volunteers daily to assist between 7:15 and 7:45 a.m. This is a great role for the working parents. It can be done according to the availability like once a week or twice a month etc.
YOGLI-MOGLI Spirit Night

September 13 from 5 to 8 p.m.

Show your VIKING SPIRIT! Join us for a delicious frozen yogurt from Yogli Mogli in Orchard Park Shopping Center next to Kroger. Yogli Mogli will donate 20% percent of all sales back to Vanderlyn Elementary!  We hope to see you there!

Nature's Garden Delivered

Vanderlyn families have a tremendous opportunity to participate in an organic produce co-op, called Nature's Garden Delivered.

If you participate, a box of organic, local produce will be delivered to Vanderlyn for you to pick up.  Deliveries are made on Tuesdays, and you can opt for a weekly or bi-weekly order.

Sign up now at
naturesgardendelivered.com.

Once you have entered your zip code you will choose Vanderlyn Elementary Co-Op from the pull down menu.  The instructions are easy to follow, and you have the flexibility to add and delete produce according to your preferences.

Pricing drops as more families join the co-op, so don't delay if you are interested!  Your kids will be excited about eating fresh, delicious fruits and veggies!

2012-2013 Reflections Contest
The Reflections Art Program, a nation-wide contest sponsored by the National PTA, has been rewarding students for artistic excellence for over 40 years!

We must never forget the critical role that artistic expression plays in our lives.  In that spirit, we remind all Vanderlyn students that it is time to think about submitting their entries for the Reflections Art Contest.  Vanderlyn has no shortage of highly creative and talented students!  Students may express that creative talent in as many categories as they would like - Visual Arts, Dance Choreography, Photography, Literature, Film Production and Music.

This year's theme is "The Magic of a Moment".  The deadline for entries is October 5 at 8 a.m. The first and second place winners in each grade and category will advance to the state level, with the possibility of advancing to the national level.  Grand prize national winners will receive monetary awards along with national recognition!  Contact Robin Murphy or Louisa Boss with any questions.  Additional contest information can be found on our Vanderlyn PTA website.

BOX TOPS, CAMPBELL LABELS, TYSONS!!!!
Have your scissors been working hard all summer?  It is time to gather your Box Tops, Campbell labels, and Tyson labels.  Collection time is right around the corner!  Be on the lookout for your collection instructions coming to you in the VIP folder.  The collection deadline is Friday, October 12, 2012.

Confused?  Never heard of Box Tops, Campbell labels, or Tyson labels?  These companies provide an easy way for us to raise money for Vanderlyn.  On participating products, just cut and save the small label.  On collection day send your collection into the school.  Very easy!  Don't know what the participating products are?  Visit these websites for more information:  www.boxtops4education.com; www.labelsforeduation.com; www.projectplus.tyson.com.

Shop at Kroger?  Buy participating Campbell products?  Then visit www.elabelsforeducation.com.  Register your shopper's card and choose Vanderlyn as your school.  Whenever you buy participating Campbell products you will automatically earn label points for our school.

Shoe Drive
Parents and students, please look through your closets and consider donating shoes that you no longer use to our first school shoe drive.  These shoes will be donated to the Dekalb International School, where students arrive daily from across the globe.  The students at the International School and their families are in great need of shoes.  There will be a collection bin in the front hallway of the Vanderlyn main office.  Thank you for your support!  For more information please contact Suzanne Baisier and the Citizenship Committee.
