Co-Presidents' Message
Be sure to attend Curriculum Night on Thursday, September 6
at 6 p.m. in the cafeteria.  This event is for parents and guardians of students.   Because this event is so well attended, students are not encouraged to attend Curriculum Night.

The evening will begin with a general PTA membership meeting.  At this time, the proposed PTA budget will be presented to the membership, and details about the annual fund will be revealed.  The proposed budget will demonstrate what exciting plans your PTA has for the students this year.

Following the general PTA meeting, everyone will head to homeroom classrooms to "Meet the Teacher".  At this time you will have various opportunities to volunteer for your child's class.  Be sure to bring your calendar to Curriculum Night!

This year the Vanderlyn administrators and teachers are hosting three 30-minute "Meet the Teacher" sessions.  Having multiple sessions allows families time to get to several classrooms.  This will be useful for families with more than one child enrolled at Vanderlyn, as well as those folks interested in meeting several teachers, including our Specials teachers (music, drama, art, PE and dance).

Don't forget that parking goes quickly because this event is so well attended.  Please pay attention to pedestrians and parking laws!

Lastly, bring your checkbook if you have not yet supported the Annual Fund or want to buy some of this year's terrific Spirit Wear.

See you Thursday!

Lunch Bunch Volunteers Needed
If you are looking for a great way to volunteer in the school and really get to know the kids in their element (eating!), then Lunch Bunch is for you!

We are in great need of volunteers to work 45 minute shifts to help the kids during lunch.  This gives our wonderful teachers their much-needed break time during lunch and is part of the reason why Vanderlyn is a great school for teachers...parent commitment!

We can schedule to your preferences either weekly, bimonthly, or monthly.  You can even be on our list as a substitute only.  If you are interested, please contact Michelle Moore or go now and sign up on Sign-up Genius for your preferred schedule.

Picture Day - September 13
Picture Day will take place on Thursday, September 13.  Both individual and class photos will be taken at this time.  Fliers containing more information will be sent home in Thursday's VIP folders.  Contact Amy Gaynor or Jen Smith with any questions.
Dunwoody Walk to School Day
Join your friends, neighbors, and classmates for this walk to Vanderlyn!

With new shoes and backpacks
We head back to school.

We can't sit in carpool
When mornings are cool!

Let's walk with our friends
And breathe the fresh air!

'Cause the new year is young
and we haven't a care!!!

If you live too far away to walk from home, please park and walk from the St Luke's Presbyterian Church.  Park in the lot closest to the intersection of Mt Vernon and Manhassett/Vermack.
Or, make a date to walk from the home of a friend!

Nature's Garden Delivered

GREAT NEWS!
Vanderlyn has partnered with NATURE'S GARDEN DELIVERED!  Vanderlyn is a host site, and we will disperse the weekly delivery of fresh organic veggies and fruits that are delivered to our school. Being a host site makes us a Co-Op and that means we can earn discounts on our orders!

BUT What does this mean?
The Vanderlyn Wellness Committee is committed to help Vanderlyn be a Healthy Place to LEARN, and one of the things we are facilitating for the entire Vanderlyn Community is the delivery of a box of local organically grown produce right to our door each Friday!

What do you have to do?
Sign up at naturesgardendelivered.com.  Once you have entered your zip code you will choose Vanderlyn Elementary Co-Op from the pull down menu.

You will be asked to fill out some personal information, a form of payment, and the size and type box you want to order.  You will be able to choose weekly or bi-weekly delivery and add or delete items you do not like or want.  Because this produce is locally grown, the fruits and veggies will be seasonal.  If we have several families sign up we will receive co-op pricing, that means a discount on your box for all those who order!

Boxes will be delivered to the Vanderlyn Gym on Tuesdays and participants will need to pick up their delivery between 2 and 3 p.m. on delivery days or before 7:45 a.m. on Wednesday mornings.

There is a $5 discount for your first order!  Use code NGD25 when you sign up.

If you have additional questions, please contact Coach Dwyer.

Your kids will be excited about quality fresh, delicious fruits and veggies!

2012-2013 Reflections Contest
"The Magic of a Moment"-what does that mean to you?  It's time to grab art supplies, cameras and dance shoes and show the world your interpretation of this year's theme for the Reflections Contest.  Students will be able to submit works of art in the following categories:  Musical Composition, Literature, Dance Choreography, Film Production, Visual Arts, and Photography.   In addition, this year's contest will feature awards for Special Artists in all of those categories.  Awards will be given in each grade and category and the 1st and 2nd place winners will go on to compete at the state level.

Shoe Drive
Parents and students, please look through your closets and consider donating shoes that you no longer use to our first school shoe drive.  These shoes will be donated to the Dekalb International School, where students arrive daily from across the globe.  The students at the International School and their families are in great need of shoes.  There will be a collection bin in the front hallway of the Vanderlyn main office.  Thank you for your support!  For more information please contact Suzanne Baisier and the Citizenship Committee.
Get your Spirit Wear at Curriculum Night
The Spirit Wear Committee will be selling new and retired spirit wear at Curriculum Night.  All of our great new styles of tees, hoodies and more will be available for purchase before and after the meetings.  Retired items will be available until they run out.

Don't forget your cash or check, so you will be able to pick up these fun items to show your Vanderlyn spirit on Friday's or any day!
Time to Stock Up!
Labor Day weekend is right around the corner, and that means it's time to stock up on groceries!  Before you do your shopping, be sure to pick up a NEW Publix Partners card from Vanderlyn's main office (or use the one you received at registration).

Every year you need to replace your old card, but then, each time you shop at Publix and swipe your Publix Partner Card, Publix will donate a percentage of your purchase to Vanderlyn!

It's simple!  Present your Publix Partners card to the cashier at check out and Publix will handle everything else!

If you are traveling for the holiday, be sure to bring your Publix Partners card with you!  The cards are good at Publix locations in Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina and Tennessee.
