Principal's Message
| Dear Vanderlyn Family,
We are also implementing a new teacher evaluation known as the Teacher Keys Effectiveness System. Both of these initiatives significantly raise the bar on student and teacher performance and I have every confidence that we will be able to meet the challenge at the highest level!
Here Comes The Band!
We are very proud and excited to offer band to 4th and 5th grade students! A letter was sent home with all of these students to get an idea of how many families would be interested. Please take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to further expose our students to the fine arts at Vanderlyn.
There's music in the sighing of a reed;
There's music in the gushing of a rill;
There's music in all things, if men had ears:
Their earth is but an echo of the spheres.
~Lord Byron
Welcome our new staff members. Do everything you can to make them feel a part of the Vanderlyn family!
Ms. Alison Turner- Pre-K Teacher
Mr. Allan McConnell- Band (4th and 5th)
A Note of Appreciation:
Thanks to all the parent volunteers that have come out to help us during morning carpool. You assistance has made drop offs run faster and smoother. We are so happy to have you help us greet our students with smiles each morning!
Mrs. Crenshaw Principal

Co-Presidents' Message
| Surprising Benefactors
During the first week of school, the Annual Fund received a donation that made us take notice. We received a message from a parent, asking us how she could deliver a cash donation to the Annual Fund. We are always happy to get these messages, but we were delighted to learn the story behind it!
Several Vanderlyn students and a couple of older sibling alumnae decided to set up a lemonade stand the last week of summer. Sales were pretty good, and these girls raised $23.85. Guess how much the cash donation to the Vanderlyn Annual Fund was?
On behalf of the PTA Executive Committee, we are humbled to accept the donation from Virginia Duffy, Kate Duffy, Emily Delmonte, Grace Delmonte, Gracie Ackaway and Caroline Gracey. We want you and these girls to know that we will be good stewards of the money donated to support the efforts of our PTA.
Girls, you are wise to invest in your school. All donations are meaningful, and no donation is too small! We believe that every family can benefit every child, and it is significant that you have made yourself a part of this mission!
In closing, please click here if you have not made your donation to the Annual Fund. You can structure flexible payments, and your donation is tax deductible.
Have a terrific week!

Nature's Garden Delivered
| |
GREAT NEWS!
Vanderlyn has partnered with NATURE'S GARDEN DELIVERED! Vanderlyn is a host site, and we will disperse the weekly delivery of fresh organic veggies and fruits that are delivered to our school. Being a host site makes us a Co-Op and that means we can earn discounts on our orders!
BUT What does this mean?
The Vanderlyn Wellness Committee is committed to help Vanderlyn be a Healthy Place to LEARN, and one of the things we are facilitating for the entire Vanderlyn Community is the delivery of a box of local organically grown produce right to our door each Friday!
What do you have to do?
Sign up at naturesgardendelivered.com. Once you have entered your zip code you will choose Vanderlyn Elementary Co-Op from the pull down menu.
You will be asked to fill out some personal information, a form of payment, and the size and type box you want to order. You will be able to choose weekly or bi-weekly delivery and add or delete items you do not like or want. Because this produce is locally grown, the fruits and veggies will be seasonal. If we have several families sign up we will receive co-op pricing, that means a discount on your box for all those who order!
Boxes will be delivered to the Vanderlyn Gym on Tuesdays and participants will need to pick up their delivery between 2 and 3 p.m. on delivery days or before 7:45 a.m. on Wednesday mornings.
There is a $5 discount for your first order! Use code NGD25 when you sign up.
If you have additional questions, please contact Coach Dwyer.
Your kids will be excited about quality fresh, delicious fruits and veggies!

What's Growing in the Organic Garden?
| Check out our new location between the main building and the gym. This will make it easier to incorporate planting, tending, and harvesting into our Health and PE curriculum. We also have seven beds beside the kindergarten playground for the younger students. Currently we are growing pumpkins and sweet potatoes. We will use the pumpkins to make yummy snacks for our staff. Fourth graders will harvest the sweet potatoes in September as part of their study of Native Americans and native crops. Our goal is for each fourth grader to take home a sample to cook for himself/herself. We also have a new rain barrel installed by the gym. Girl Scout Troop #10571 (led by Cindy Tibbets) donated the barrel and last year's Art Club painted it for us. Thank you to both groups for helping us use resources wisely. Another BIG thank you to all of these parents and their families who tended the garden and new trees this summer: Anne Hicks, Angela Mitchum, Laura Tarrago, Ellen Etheridge, Michelle Fincher, and Judy Limor. Please contact Tina Wilkinson if you have questions or would like to volunteer.

School Councils, as created by Georgia law, provide advice, recommendations, and assistance to school principals and to local boards of education. The School Council focuses on student achievement and school improvement. Contact your parent representatives---Bill Florence, Kim Gavlak, Nicole Jasper, Judy Limor, Veronica McNamara, Jennifer Westrick, Tina Wilkinson---if there are issues you would like School Council to consider. For more information, please send emails to Bill Florence.

Shoe Drive
|
Parents and students, please look through your closets and consider donating shoes that you no longer use to our first school shoe drive. These shoes will be donated to the Dekalb International School, where students arrive daily from across the globe. The students at the International School and their families are in great need of shoes. There will be a collection bin in the front hallway of the Vanderlyn main office. Thank you for your support! For more information please contact Suzanne Baisier and the Citizenship Committee.

Annual Fund Update
|
The Annual Fund is off to a great start! A BIG thank you to all who have donated so far!
100% participation is the key to this year's success at Vanderlyn. We need every family to donate, in whatever amount you feel comfortable with giving.
For those who haven't yet made your contribution, it's not too late. It's easy to help: write a check, use your debit or credit card at www.vanderlynpta.com, and check to see if you qualify for a matching corporate donation.
