Principal's Message
| Parents,
Our first week of school was very exciting and busy! There were great big smiles from returning students and a few tears from our first-timers (parents, too). Fortunately, by day three, everyone was settled in and adjusting very well. Teachers are busy teaching and setting high expectations for student learning. Research tells us that what we do during the first days of school will be an accurate indicator of our success for the rest of the school year.
As we establish our routines at school, I would like to solicit your support in utilizing the following tips so that we can create the best experience for your child(ren): - Make sure you get to know your child's teacher and develop an effective communication mode.
- Have a homework space with the supplies needed. Set aside a regular time for homework. Know that your child is responsible for their assignments, but take the time to review their work.
- Have your child pack his/her backpack the evening before.
- Make sure your child gets enough sleep. Enforce a regular bedtime.
- Make sure breakfast is nutritious-and eaten!
- Pay attention to your child's behavior. If there is a change, find out what is behind it.
- Be careful that your child is not over-scheduled. Sports, music and enrichment activities are great, but every child needs some down time.
- Volunteer at the school.
- Display projects, papers, tests and other visible signs of achievement. Your child's school work is important!

We are off to a terrific start! Mrs. Crenshaw Principal

Co-Presidents' Message
|
Did you register a child for school last week? Then join us in shouting "Thank You" to the incredible volunteers that made registration day a success. Vanderlyn's registration ran smoothly because the lines were not long and parents knew what to expect. Volunteers, we appreciate you!!! The PTA First Vice Presidents Sheryl Bomar and Jodi Rosenberg dedicated uncounted summer hours towards the planning of Registration Day. Keeping lines at tolerable lengths was a primary objective, and the results exceeded expectations. Preparing new kindergarten families for registration day, particularly with regard to fees collected, was identified as critical to minimizing the "trauma" a kindergarten family experiences. As a result, sticker shock was minimized. Your Vanderlyn PTA demonstrated to the Vanderlyn teachers and administrators that the PTA is ready to serve, reinforcing that our school is a great place for teachers to teach. Numbers are revealing. During registration week, 771 students were registered with the assistance of 92 volunteers and, of course, staff. Please take notice: because we had more than one volunteer for every ten students that registered, we created success. Volunteerism is a critical building block for the success of our school. Do you know what our volunteers hold in common? The children. Concern for the children brings our volunteers together, and the result is a stronger school and community. You are invited to be a part of it! There are so many opportunities and needs for volunteers, we can find you a role that suits your talents and availability. Please consider how you would like to volunteer through the PTA this year. At Vanderlyn, every family can benefit every child through the support of our PTA. Have a terrific second week of school! Julia LeDoyen and Courtney Kuriger

Special Request
| | We ask that parents do not plan to have lunch with your child(ren) until after Labor Day. This will allow us the opportunity to fine-tune our cafeteria procedures and maximize procedural efficiency. Also, if you need to check your child out of school early, please do so by 2:00. Otherwise, our dismissal procedures can be compromised with last minute disruptions.

Drama at Vanderlyn!
| Vanderlyn is proud to introduce our new Drama Program! In addition to a full complement of academic subjects, students are now offered drama, dance, music, visual arts and physical education. Headed by Dr. Will Hayes, drama classes will provide an extension to our literature program and will provide each student with a comprehensive education inclusive of special knowledge and experience in the arts. The transforming role of Vanderlyn is to nurture students in the arts and harness their enthusiasm to become communicative artists. We strive to provide the highest caliber of artistic education for budding musicians, dancers, and actors so that they may achieve their fullest potential as artists, leaders and global citizens. Indeed, there is no place like Vanderlyn!

| Common Core Georgia Performance Standards |
Georgia joined with 47 other states well over a year ago to develop a set of core standards for K-12 in English language arts and mathematics. On June 2, the Common Core State Standards were released. These standards provide consistent framework to prepare students for success in college and/or the 21st century workplace. These standards represent a common sense next step from the Georgia Performance Standards. The Georgia State Board of Education adopted the CCGPS on July 8, 2010. The implementation of these NEW standards will begin in the 2012-2013 school year.
See the websites below for more information: www.georgiastandards.org
